Gus wants Origin / international eligibility reviewed!

For once I agree with Gus. He has jumped on a band wagon that many members of this forum have been pushing for most of this year.

We must assist our international competitors to develop their strength.

The international body should urgently review the qualification guidelines for blokes wanting to play for their country of birth.

It is ridiculous that players such as Sonny Bill Williams, Benji Marshall, Karmichael Hunt, Timana Tahu and Tonie Carroll have to knock back playing for their country so they can play in the State of Origin series in Australia.

Why can't they do both?

If they are educated and play junior football in Australia, they should be eligible to play in our premier domestic representative events at the senior level. If they also qualify to play for Great Britain, New Zealand or an emerging rugby league nation, they should always be allowed to fulfil that dream as well.

We have more than enough players to go around and anything to help improve the strength of our competitors surely must be a good thing.

The momentum is building. I am confident we can get this change within 2 years. Hopefully it will happen before Karmichael Hunt pulls on a Kangaroos jersey.

State of Origin is NEW SOUTH WALES and QUEENSLAND. We cant keep having foreigners play in SOO.

Where's the tradition??

If you play for New Zealand, GB, France or whatever. You shouldnt be eligible to play for NSW or QLD. This must be stopped.

Next thing you know, Morely will play for BLues. :?

Should not happen. It's wrong, just wrong.

I don't think I have ever said this before, but I agree with Gus on this issue. :?

On paper what you say is right. And in a perfect world, that is how it would happen. But the fact of the matter is that international rugby league is being hurt because players are choosing to play for Australia to be eligible to play Origin.

Carroll shouldnt be playing Australia for starters.
How many times do I have to say this? Carroll played for Qld first, so it should've been NZ he was ineligible for. And if you say that he shouldn't have been eligible for Australia in the first place, I think it would've been non-sensical for the rules to state that he could only play for a country that he probably doesn't even remember (how much do you remember from when you were six?).

I don't agree with Gus at all and feel strongly about it, for me International RL needs to be the ultimate but by allowing foreigners to play origin it only puts origin more in the spotlight while pushing Int' RL further down the rung.

Gee I didn't realise Morley was educated and played his junior footie in Oz - man he should've played for the Blues years ago then!!!

Shall we use some common sense or shall we just go off half-cocked with a full set of blinkers on.

hunt
mason
tahu
adrian lam
etc etc

To me, that sounds like the writing is on the wall for State of Origin. It's been a hell of a ride, and it was undoubtedly what the game needed at the time, but now there is definitely a push for something 'different'.
Instead of tinkering around with SOO, maybe it's better to scrap it entirely and bring in something completely new that fits with the current climate? Personally I wouldn't want to go back to the '97 SL Tri-Series format (NSW, QLD, NZ), but maybe it's the only option???

So... you think that it doesn't matter what country you play for, but if you are in the Australian competition (NRL) you can play State of Origin?

There are a few things wrong with this.

1. It will no longer be 'State of Origin' football, but rather an 'All Star' game.
2. It will rank above international football.
3. A good 'Australian' player will have to miss out to make room for the 'foreign' player.

NSW Forward pack for next year:
8. Morley
9. Buderus
10. Omeley
11. Hindmarsh
12. Fitzgibbon
13. Sonny Bill Williams

Bench:
Mason
N. Cayless
J. Cayless
C. Wing

Hell maybe you could even bring Danny McGuire over from England to play.

I'm sure watching the NSW all world team smash Qld by 100 would be entertaining for NSW people the first few times.

Selection for Origin has nothing to do with where you were born.. it is based on which state you first played grade footy. Matt Rodgers was born in NSW and played for Qld.

The only thing that would have to change is that once a player played SOO they could still be available to play for thier country of birth.

Something has to change, because the thought of the Kiwis losing another top player like Hunt really pisses me off.
