I've said this before but I'll say it again.

If you include internationals all Origin becomes is a glorified All-stars game. keep the tradition. The Tri-Nations is in it;s infancy but so far it's been a big success. I would love to see it get the main-stream attention that Origin gets. Hopefully that way Kiwi's being courted to play Origin will realise that International League is the pinnacle of the sport.

BTW Gould is a goose.

Hey, I agree with the QLD vs NSW sentiment ... State of Origin football should never be about anything else.

But the fact is that some people (no matter what their motives are!) are looking for a change. It was a big enough change when the Origin format was introduced in 1980 ... and perhaps now is time for another change.

a somewhat controversial idea 8)

Why not have a 2 match Origin series *and* a NSW/NZ/QLD Tri-Series at the same time?

in the Tri-Series the 2 games between QLD and NSW also count at that year's Origin (any meeting in the final of the Tri-Series would NOT count towards that season's Origin.

If the idea of a 2 match Origin series is unacceptable, then mayby play a Origin Match before the Tri-Series?

It's just an idea :)

ps: or make it that a QLD/NSW Tri-Series final does count for Origin but if it is a NZ/NSW or NZ/QLD final there is either a additional game between NSW & QLD to decide the Origin (*if* it is 1 game all from the first 2 game) or just leave it as a 2 game Origin Series?

What I am thinking is that a Tri-Series does not have to replace Origin, but can incorportate it :?:

FFS people!!
why is everyone moaning about this idea?
why has morley's name been mentioned in this thread?
when has morley represented NSW at junior levels?
if we keep the rule as it is then morley could play for NSW next year because of the residency rule.

players like SBW have bled and put there body on the line for NSW which is a hell of alot more than alot of the posters in here have done for there state. why deny the chance for someone that should rightfully be allowed. if they make this rule change players like morley will never be allowed to play in it and it will allow players that have actually contributed to the state football system to play in SOO.

why not put in a quota of non-aussie test players. maybe 3 per squad.

Shiznit, Morley can't play for NSW next year cause of residency rules, cause he has played for Great Britain this year, he would have to satisfy the 2 year 'no rep rule' before he could be considered.

The main reason why you cannot allow this rule to come through is it would KILL State of Origin football. Queensland at the moment are struggling to bring through the talent and I fear they are going to have a few lean years in the near future, that said hopefully passion will see them through, but by introducing this new rule NSW will get an even bigger base to draw from.

Some internationals I can think of already who are current international players that NSW can add with little to no problem, Cayless brothers and Sonny Bill Williams, are 3 that spring to mind instantly, and then you have the question of what counts as your first 'first grade' game of football, is Bartercard Cup first grade/rep worthy enough? Technically under the rulings its not, so you could then get a lot of Kiwis and Islanders who are brought over and their first qualifying game is when they play for an NRL side or its feeder side, meaning NSW would benefit the most as it brings over the most.

what a crock a shit
origin is about those brave warriors from NSW against those flithy flithy scumbags from QLD theres no room in origin for kiwis or poms for that matter.

Sonny Bill has shown where his loyaltys are just as the Cayless brothers did, their kiwis so no origin for them EVER.

Gus' real motivation is to strengthen NSW with having Morley and Sonny-Bill Williams in Blue jerseys but despite that I still agree with him.

We've seen New Zealand hit hard with having Karmichael Hunt opt for Origin football over playing for his country and until we change the current laws it's going to happen time and time again. It's not as if SOO is used as a trial for the Australian team selection anymore.

I completely understand what Gus is saying & somewhat agree with him

But doing this would take the 'religion' out of Origin

Okay ... so why not get rid of Origin altogether and bring in something different?

Remember, the Origin concept was originally born from necessity - the normal NSW vs QLD fixtures just weren't working. A change was made, and hey presto - the legend was born!

And if the time for Origin has now passed, I would like to suggest an "all-star" game instead ... maybe eligibility could be based on 'traditional' clubs vs the rest, e.g

The best of Roosters, Sharks, Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, Raiders, Panthers, Eels & Bulldogs vs the best of Broncos, Cowboys, Warriors, Storm, Dragons, Tigers & Knights (1988 would be the 'separation point').

And yes, that probably does sound completely ridiculous. But given what Gus Gould is suggesting, maybe it's a reasonable solution ... ??

the bartercard cup should be worth enough

since it acts as a feeder to the warriors nrl team

not that different to the australian feeder clubs

Why can't a player like Hunt be a passionate Queenslander and Kiwi?

I can't believe all the people in this thread who have completely misunderstood the concept. This is not about getting the likes of Morley or a Stacey Jones into origin, but kids who have grown up in Australia, who want to play Origin, but would rather play Test footy for NZ than Aus. These are the guys who play for NZ, but speak with Aussie accents. They should be able to represent NSW and QLD if they want to, and play for the Kiwis.

QLD wont be such a big loser. The Gold Coast gets lots of imigration from NZ. I expect more Karmichael Hunt's to emerge from QLD in the coming years.

Why say stuff like that without thinking about the NSW players that have played for other countries... Off the top of my head would be Luke Ricketson..

Rep Honours
10 games for NSW 1999-2003, five Tests 2003, Kangaroo tour 2003, City Origin 2003, World Cup for Ireland 2000

State of Origin eligibility rules overhauled in historic international shake-up

State of Origin will change forever following a landmark decision on its eligibility rules which could have major ramifications for the representative careers of a host of players.

State of Origin has undergone one of the most significant revamps in its history after the ARL Commission threw the series open to players who have pledged their allegiance to New Zealand and England.
It comes as the ARL Commission confirms it will take State of Origin to NZ in 2027 with a match in Auckland.

The landmark decision could have major ramifications for the representative careers of a host of players including Sydney Roosters star Victor Radley, Gold Coast dynamo AJ Brimson, Cronulla prop Addin Fonua-Blake, Dolphins young gun Isaiya Katoa, Canberra fullback Kaeo Weekes and Newcastle superstar Kalyn Ponga.
