Hagan and Eels Conspiracy Theory

As title suggests, I don't necessarily believe this to be the case, and there will certainly never be any proof, but.....

Deep down would Hagan be pleased if his Eels lost this weekend and in doing so eliminated the Knights from the finals race?

Of course it can be argued that first grade coach would always want his side to win and finish the season on a positive note. However, 2 factors countering that:

1. Win, lose or draw against the Warriors, critics and fans aren't going to change their perception of the Eels' season. I honestly don't think Hages would feel like coming out and smashing them would earn much respect and get people backing him for next year. Basically, it's a no-win situaton for him.

2. The actual match will be quickly forgotten, but whether or not the Knights (and therefore his rival Smith) make the finals or not will be long remembered. There can be no clearer victory to Brian Smith and the Knights for us to make the finals and them to miss out. It's hard to imagine that deep down Hages wouldn't be secretly pleased to see both sides finish outside the 8. That way nobody in the media etc can ever use it against him. Technically speaking both sides will have failed.

Anyone agree, or is Hages (though an awful coach) a better man than that?

Forgot to say, hopefully if he does feel this way he will inadvertently coach them to victory, since wanting them to win hasn't exactly helped much.

i don't think what Hages wants has much to do with anything at Parra at the moment.

not surprisingly, the two best wins of Parra's season, against Easts and Tigers, co-incided with him missing a lot of the lead up due to illness.

co-incidence? :sarcasm:

I think Hagan has a lot to play for in the final round. Fitzgerald has already come out during the week and said that the decision on whether or not Hagan remains at the club beyond 2009 will be made before next season kicks off. That gives him one last game to leave an impression.

For that to happen (the Knights miss the top 8, and the Warriors go in with a win over the Eels) there would have to be some SERIOUS turn around in points differential. At the moment we are +52 and the Warriors are -87 - that's a WHOPPING 139 points difference. Even if we were to re-visit last disastrous trip to Suncorp and get beat by 65 therefore putting our for and against to -12 - the Warriors would then still have to beat Parra by 76 to jump over us.
.
Realistically - can anyone see that happening.
.
Hagan would be far better off hoping for us to get beat by the 65 again - then he would only have to beat the Warriors by 13 for them to get in.

If the Knights lose and the Warriors win the Knights miss out. Personally I can see the Knights knocking over the Broncos anyway.

Er, You might want to check the competition table before you have a really embarrassing moment showing off to your Warriors fan mates that we made the finals when, in fact, we didn't. They are on the same points as us.

One way to solve this conspiracy K-Man. How about we win on Friday night and then we don't worry about Parra? ;-)

"Hagan said the season would be reviewed after this Saturday’s final game against finals contenders, the New Zealand Warriors at Parramatta Stadium.
He said Finch was an almost-certain non-starter and Hindmarsh was unlikely because of continuing problems with a big toe, and other injuries he was carrying.
Threequarter Joel Reddy and backrower Daniel Wagon had also not recovered from injuries and would not be risked.
Hagan said if Parramatta were still in contention for the finals, Finch and Hindmarsh would have been certain starters."

That's from a thread in the Eels section

Last week was our Grand Final. I have a feeling this could turn out like the last time we versed the Broncos after putting it all on the line the week before, losing our hooker in the process. Week 2 of the finals 06. I'd love for us to go out and towel em up, but we put everything on the line last week, and might not have it in us.

Its a hard ask to back up again after putting so much emotion and effort into the last game and then have this weeks preperation hampered by Spitgate. I hope you are wrong Keeney, but I share some of your concerns.

We are a team in much better shape than that previous one, with a much better tactical coach. I'm sure it will be nothing like that game, but we might not have enough to win when it counts.

i had the same concerns immediately after the match as you two do... however there was a post by pika recently in here that sort of eased these fears substantially. pika said that the celebrations in the dressing room after the melbourne match lasted all of 2 minutes, and then everyone regained their focus and began talking about next week. this shows that the team is genuinely focused and very very serious about what they are doing. it shows that they believe in themselves and don't see any limits to what they can achieve this year. most of all, it shows dedication and commitment to the overall cause.

i don't think we'll see anything other than another 100% committed and desperate effort against the broncos. whether they physically have the juice to go on with it remains to be seen... however i don't think they'll roll over and give up trying.

I would not question their commitment just the ability to come back after such a high, however I agree with you and Pika's post made me feel a little more confident. The fact that Smith was also at ANZ watching the Broncos on Sunday also is a good sign for me.
