Harlequins RL -> London Broncos

From what I know the crowds were very poor, I mean they were quite low before they became the Harlequins, but if I remember watching on Fox years ago, one game they would attract 3,000 against probably Salford, but their next home game would get around 10,000 against a top side

Since they were the Harlequins crowds would be as low as 2,000 regardless of who they play.

If I remember seeing on a Skysports website it was either Brian Carney or Phil Clarke that said that they need to move away from Twickeham.

They never got 10,000. It was the other way round really, crowds for the smaller teams were higher when they were the Broncos. You can find all the attendances on slstats.org

There is a club called South London Storm.

I don't think the Broncos is really a strong brand for London - didn't they adopt that name in the first place because of a link up with Brisbane Broncos? There's also Denver Broncos. 'Bronco' is not really a relevant word in England, and there are also issues with the use of 'London'. It's an improvement from Harlequins, but London Broncos has failed once already and I think there are far better potential choices of name.

The word Broncos isn't particularly relevant to Australians either.

I'm glad they didn't go with red.. Way too much red in SL. Dark Blue and Sky Blue was a good idea.

Just not sure the jersey design is the right fit.

Logo is good. Old one was good, but its not a bad change.

London Broncos are reborn as Harlequins go back to the future

London's Super League club are to revert to their old Broncos name as part of major re-branding.

The club, launched in 1980 as Fulham and 11 years later renamed London Crusaders, became London Broncos when Australian outfit Brisbane Broncos took over them in 1994 and they enjoyed their finest hour with a trip to Wembley five years later.

The club never kicked on from their Challenge Cup final appearance and five years ago caused a stir when they moved for a second time to the Stoop and this time took on the name of their co-tenants, Harlequins.

Their closer links with the rugby union club did not endear them to the game's traditionalists and attendances continued to hover disappointingly around the 3,500 mark.

On Tuesday the club opted to drop the Harlequins name and change their playing kit in an effort to revive their fortunes, but will continue to use the Stoop.

The club plan to play two games in 2012 "on the road" in an effort to take the game to a wider audience but are in talks about a new three-year agreement with their landlords.

Chairman David Hughes said: "I am delighted that we are returning to be the London Broncos. It is a name that resonates with success on the pitch and that is what we want to achieve next season.

"I have committed to the club definitely for the next three years during this Super League license period and we will work hard to retain that in three years' time and become a club to be reckoned with both on and off the pitch."

The team's new home kit is predominantly black with a bright blue trim to incorporate elements of the original Broncos design.

Broncos chief executive Gus Mackay said: "We engaged with fans and stakeholders and included as many people as possible in the rebrand process so as to take on board everybody's views.

"The fans and players mostly pointed towards a return to the London Broncos and their ideas are reflected within the brand concept.

"This relaunch provides us with a unique opportunity to target a new audience and raise awareness of our club as well as that of Super League in London."

Tuesday's announcement was greeted with delight by London Mayor Boris Johnson.

"London is one of the world's greatest sporting cities and rugby league has an increasingly important role to play in helping to maintain this status," he said.

"I am delighted to be working with the RFL on their community development programme in London and I am equally pleased to see a team like the London Broncos reclaiming their original moniker and proudly displaying the London brand."

London Broncos have also undertaken heavy recruitment in a bid to transform their playing fortunes after finishing third from bottom of Super League this year.

So Harlequins was because of a union team, was it? I thought it was strange having a clown as the logo...

Gees, the jersey is boring, isn't it!

At least now they can really promote the rugby team.

Hard to do when your the Quins, someone says Harlequins to you in London and you think of the Union team.

The name itself doesn't really matter, Tigers are not relevant to Cas or Rhinos to Leeds. Its a name people know so it can be used as a promotional tool.

That's awesome. Now if only Halifax and Oldham (as the Bears) can return, it'll be a very nostalgic feeling next season in the esl.

I guess. I just think London Broncos sounds like an American Football team.

Better than sounding like a rahrah team!

The simple fact is that over the past five years the club could have gone and signed the best players in the world and won the title. But people reading the newspaper or watching the news would hear the name Harlequins and automatically think of union. It's probably the most rahrah of all rahrah clubs, completely synonymous with that sport. All we did was give them free advertising.

At least this way some of those that stayed away from QuinsRL will now come back - I know a couple of them who are now looking to return.

As opposed to Vikings, Saints, Warriors, Wildcats, Tigers, Cowboys, Titans, Bulldogs, Panthers...and those are just names in American football (NFL and NCAA). Many more appear across other major American sports. Who cares. The US doesn't own the names.

yes, have emailed my cousin. He is now likely to attend at least some games. He has not attended since the Quins venture.

Oldham are Bears?

I didn't realise it was associated with union but i always hated the Harlequins name. It just doesn't sound like a team i would want to support.
