Harold Matthews and SG Ball Discussion Thread

I assumed your selector mate would have told you that they selected a top 13 as their "ideal" starting side for the academy games at the end of the tour. All the boys will get game time early, its quite reasonable to suggest with the easy games first Groat wont start there, but in the "prefferred" team the numbers are as I said which is a fair representation of the championships. FYI Groat was in the top 13 along with 3 others from CCC.
Actually my mate as you call him told me they picked the best 24 players and position were discussed after that and adjustments were made so no top 13 was picked in fact they will still be trialling for a spot through there training performances......

Sorry but he is wrong. I was there, spoke with two selectors who I have known for many years and both confirmed to me on who was chosen and how the process took shape. That is they picked 1-13 then who could supplement them ie those who could cover which positions and mutliple positions where possible the same way any first grade coach would pick a starting 13 then 4 reserves to cover multiple situations.

Also have since looked back and watched again the 3 round games and can say that South was the third best hooker the head to head battle ccc vs chs was a victory to redman South had only 2 runs, one which was where he attempted to dive over from dummy half but was legally stripped over the line (although he recieved the penalty).

Well if you were a coach you would be giving yourself an uppercut because you dont pick a team that way and it just shows how dumb the selectors are and how dumb you look for believing that they know what they are doing and by your own admission you didnt watch the semifinal or the last game south played in where he was dynamite and next time you watch these games do a tackle count and then tell me who is the better hooker because apparently you have tackle in this game and one of the hookers picked was told to start defending in the middle core otherwise they wont get picked...

you also forgot to mention the other two round games because he probly had one reasonable game and four good games out of five where as redman had one good game out of five...

I might be biast being a massive penrith fan but im trying to be neutral on this and i cant go past the fact that south was in the top two hookers i was also dissapointed for Tom Eisunhuth but he didnt play enough and didnt perform at his best but south was my pick for allround hooker ......he is an awesome defender....

It was mentioned a few pages back in this thread that George Jennings may be going to Parra. Any further news on this?

It will be great to keep him so we have Robert in Harold Matthews, George in SG Ball and Michael in First Grade in 2011.

Are you serious? You think coaches dont pick their best starting 13 and then look at the best fit around that? Whether that is 3 props and half/hooker cover or a backrow/outside back cover. Glad you dont coach then! Like to see where I said I didnt see the semi and final I saw all games, was there all week but noted I have since watched the 3 round games back again on DVD. Dynamite is hardly the word I would use to describe him in either of those games. Even Black and White posted earlier that he was third best hooker. But a bloke who wasnt there thinks he knows best. You are obviously very bias. Eisenhuth I think would have been a good chance but limited minutes due to injury cost him.

South was decent in the other round game I watched against QLD but wasnt spectacular. Harry Seijka, Matt Groat, David Nofoaluma and James Tedesco were the best of his team in that game. As was redman in his other game agains QLD. Decent but hardly spectacular.

How are the matts and ball sides shaping up next year competitive winning squads or will they struggle

It will be interesting to see how the ball go considering it will be made up of quite a few from this years harold matts winning team. Quite a few of the right age boys, especially forwards who would have been automatic selections have gone elsewhere or arent as dominat as they were. That team was also short in the halves in their matts year of 2009 so again youngsters might have to be promoted.

The Matts team should be at the pointy end of the competition again. Lodge, Fuimoano, Glanville, Jennings and a good supporting cast, quite a few who played academy last year. Should be as good as most, although Parra will be strong again as should the dogs and possibily wests and illawarra as well.

With Brett Atkinson coaching SG Ball i would imagine he would pick a fair few of his HM team from last year. Be interesting to see if Dave Cartwright and Barry Walker are his Assistant Coaches.

From the 2009 starting team both props tai (roosters) and doran (bears), back rowers taavale (roosters) and antonelli (roosters).

Shame really as Tai and Jakiel would have been an awesome front row combination. With a back row of Cartwright, Tuavao and Antonelli.

I've heard Tai and Antonelli have both signed with roosters, but im pretty sure the other two are both wanting to play for Penrith if they are good enough? are they good enough?

I've watched Jakiel play a few school footy game and I believe his best position for SG Ball would be in the back row??

He won the Harold Matthews Player of the Year playing Front Row, so i don't see why they would move him.
