Harvey Norman launches online game-seller site

HARVEY Norman has launched a direct import website to sell video games at cheaper prices evading the GST and warning game buyers they will pay "much higher prices" for titles in its own stores.
The Australian retail giant will officially launch harveynormandirectimport.com at 6pm AEDST tonight in an effort to catch post-Christmas sales.
The website will sell video games for consoles, with prices significantly cheaper than seen on the websites of leading Australian game chains.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for Xbox 360 will be $35 cheaper on the new website than at EB Games, for example. Similarly, Batman: Arkham City will be $20 cheaper. Shipping will be charged at a flat fee of $3.95 per game and no GST will be charged for orders under $1000.
The game titles will be sourced from overseas suppliers and sold by Harvey Norman Ireland, a company Australian chief executive Gerry Harvey said was separate to the local retail chain.
Mr Harvey said the company had considered the audacious move for 12 months, finally launching the offering after the Australian Productivity Commission announced it would take a further six months to investigate adding GST to overseas purchases.
He said bricks and mortar Harvey Norman stores would still sell games, but took the unusual move of warning Australian consumers not to purchase them.
"If people want to buy games in stores they can but they will be paying much higher prices," he said.
"We're not doing this with a great deal of joy. We've been able to do this for a long time and we've held off and held off but you get to a stage where you just can't hold off any more."
Mr Harvey said the company was considering offering the direct importation of other goods in future and "we'll let you know soon".
Harvey Norman's move follows JB Hi-Fi's addition of a direct importation section on its website (jbhifi.com.au/direct-import) last month. The section offers big-name DSLR cameras and lenses at cheaper prices than those seen in Australia.

This isn't getting me to buy games from them. There are much better online retailers if you're looking to save money and better local stores to support if you want to keep it Australian, ie The Gamesmen.

It's up now. Some prices:

MW3 - $63
BF3 - $62
AC Revelations - $55
Skyrim - $59
Uncharted 3 - $64

Nice prices. Not buying it because they should be in store prices.

I wonder if they will import Syndicate

Good prices but I simply don't like Harvey Norman. Gerry Harvey comes across as an arrogant, self-interested wanker with his garbage about charging GST on overseas purchases. And Ozgameshop hasn't failed me yet. If I want to buy instore i'll go to JB Hifi or Gametraders or even GAME. Eb can suck my dick too. Unless they have a good special...

In fact I dont think I've ever bought a game from Harvey Norman.

I like how the game images are cropped so people don't see the UK and EU ratings on them...

Zavvi/TheHut/OZGameShop/etc are still cheaper plus they all have zero/smaller delivery fees.

In fact I dont think I've ever bought a game from Harvey Norman.

Got Bioshock 2 for $5 when I was looking for furniture once.

the cynic in me thinks this is just an attempt by Harvey to force the government into action over GST for online purchases.

^this. I also hate him cause of those ads for Australian made stuff where he says "if you're not buying Australian made, why...why not???????". Surely he realised the irony of the fact a lot if the stuff he sells is imported??

Went into GAME and EB yesterdayday and was surprised to see GAME massively overpriced.

FIFA 12 on special for 98 bucks on sale.

MW3 and BF3 were very similar.

Disgusting.

Actually I've been into both GAME and EB and noticed some very good sales. Not so much for 2012 stuff, but there are a heap of slightly older games for $20-40

When EB have their "our prices are down to regular prices" sale they are good. That heroes sale of theirs was great lots of shit for cheap.

This is slightly ironic.

It was the Harvey Norman bashing thread a year or so ago that set me onto Ozgameshop in the first place.

Haven't bought a game in a retail store in Australia since

Exactly what it is, and I support it 100%.

My livelihood is affected by this same issue of GST free imports, so anything that can be done to have International sellers (who dont employ your family, or neighbours) sell products for similar prices to those on bricks and mortar shops.

Have you ever imported a large quantity of good to sell in a retail store?

The import duties and taxes are generally higher than the invoice price of the items.
