I think we need to get a better understanding re coaches
Far too often names are put up and then the process of praising some and rumours of them coming to us start and meanwhile others are picked apart and people questioned / harangued for even considering some of them.
First and foremost it is obvious the recruitment of coaches from within has been poor and had disastrous outcomes.
Second there appears to be a propensity for that to be continued which is no doubt un-pallatable to the fans and probably some of the players.
So all of that needs to be avoided.
There are only so many coaches in then NRL ranks and many of those are totally reliant on a great squad to get any sort of result.
Others have good / great squads and can do little with them which is probably player attitude not aptitude related so that puts a cloud above those coaches.
The available pool therefore is really quite small and keenly contested and too be honest not many of the great coaches are willing to take too many risks at a club without a great management culture and playing roster.
St GI is lacking in both those areas so we have little to attract anyone of great note.
Bennett in many ways came to fulfil his own ego, to see if he could do it outside of his Bronco's ever reliable system.
So it is more than likely that we will have to take on a coach who has limited 1st grade NRL exposure but it is totally essential that that coach is steeped in knowledge from working within and for clubs with great systems.
It would also be beneficial if that coach had great player relationships and discipline.
Kevin Walters IMO fits those requirement, so should not be discounted.
Many here believe we will hook a big fish coach and there are plenty of rumours suggesting that, all of which I am sceptical about.
For mine Smith too old, Sheens too old, ESL coaches maybe ok but if they were really that good wouldn't they already be here?
IMO KW would be a great upgrade on what we have and would certainly break the link between players for our club ascending to coaching without proper apprenticeships.
We should therefore analyse the coaches who don't have current contracts short list them and stop waiting for maybe's from the existing NRL coaching ranks.
So your criteria is working in great systems and steeped in knowledge, with a bonus being if they have 'great player relationships' and discipline?
Nothing about the ability to actually coach rugby league? To analyse a group of men, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and come up with a game plan to utilise the former and strengthen the latter? To adapt strategy in order to counter what the opposition throws at you? To drill these structures and strategies into players through best-practice training methods?
Yes, there's limited options, but they are out there. Hell, Walters might be a viable option, but there's no actual proof that he would be (and being better than Mary isn't exactly a benchmark - I am sitting on a chair, at a computer, next to a coffee mug, and all 3 inanimate objects would be better options than Mary!).
If it were up to me, I'd be looking hard at Tony Smith or Shaun Wane; both have adapted their styles over the years as ESL and worked very well with the squads they have. Smith in particular lifted all teams he took over and has won a number of titles with them.
If it had to be someone inexperienced, it would be Demetriou out Garth Brennan. Brennan has worked wonders over the years with Penrith's juniors and has assisted plenty of coaches. And the way Demetriou continued to adapt and work with the skills of the teams he is given is proof enough that he is as near to being ready to coach NRL as anyone.
This is all assuming Cleary and Hasler are out of the picture. I wouldnt' give a second thought to B.Smith or Sheens, both have been out of the game and Sheens seemed to be losing touch and ability to adapt late in his NRL career too.
Anyone else who's been mentioned would be far too much of a risk.
