I got some great stuff sent to me today for use in my website from Buff and Sullo - names will be revealed on website (later - still putting it together as I drink)

The oldies - this pic will bring a tear to your eye, The Youngens - have you ever heard the folklore about the ploy Sir Thomas Bishop adopted during the 1973 GF.

Well at every available opportunity he would wack some big unsuspecting Manly forward with a beautifull little combination and then retire to a safe viewing area and watch as Big Cliff Watson and others would take up the battle so to speak.

Melee after beautiful melee would erupt, with Referee Keith Page and the linesman doing the Canadian threestep....

I'm like the late great Big Kev, "I'm excited about the pic"

Just have a look at this - the sharks earning respect.... Go ... Go you sharkies.

Caption with original picture stats -
Boys will be boys. All hell breaks loose as Cliff Watson and Peter Peters clash in the 1973 grand final. Incident instigator, Cronulla captain Tommy Bishop, second from right, seems to be looking for a place to hide.
- thanks Buff
Players involved from left to right
John O'Neill, Manly, Greg Pearce (the original one), Peter Peters Manly, Cliff Watson, Keith Page Ref, Warren Fischer, Tommy Bishop and Bob Wear.

Tommy Bishop on Cliff Watson's 1973 Grand Final warm up

There was Cliffy leaning against the post. I went over and asked. "What's going on Cliff?" He said: "It's all right... it's all right. They're not playing yet."
- Tommy Bishop

Cheers and Bon Appetite

Beautiful Stuff. As a Queenslander it was a rare honour to meet Tommy, a legend worthy of the legend.

Aaah, I remember watching that game as a 7 year-old on a rainy saturday afternoon in Newcastle.
We went damn close to winning that game. And we probably would have won another 8 by now if we had.

Tommy would be the mayor of the Shire now if we had've won and those tactics would be folklore like the great balmain lay-down aginst Souths or the ball up the jumper.

If only....

But here this might help a little

courtesy of Tony Adams great book
The Hitmen - A tribute to League's tough guys

The late Lurch O'Neill on the 1973 Grand Final
"The '73 Grand Final against Cronulla was boots and all.
Of all the grand finals I played in, that's the one people always
ask me about. It's the game they all remember. And it's not
because of the quality of the football; it wasn't a great game
as such. They remember it because it was such a rugged affair.

p-30-8.jpg

"At one stage their little halfback Tommy Bishop who was a cheeky bludger, kicked me in the shins. I started chasing him but he ran and hid behind big Cliff Watson

I nearly caught up with him a few times, but he was too slippery.

Games like that were hard, but they were great to play in. You knew what was required in those days - you had to get over your opposite front rower. And while it was tough, not too many players got badly hurt. The hard stuff was all part of the game and you accepted it"

Too young to see it but I do own the match on DVD Cliff Watson is damn funny, all the players warming up and Watson cool as leaning on the goal post for the entire time. All the fights and little niggling in that match was great too i wish footy was still like that.

You want to get your hands on the old ABC tv one, its in black and white and shows all the stinks warts and all.

The coloured versions I have seen are censored to the Shouse-house.

Ive been lent a dvd maker 'unit' as soon as I work the bugger out I might be able to re-record some of my old stuff.
