I was reading today how ricky wanted brett stuart.
So Dugan was first pick-Stuart was 2nd-Minni 3rd.

With Gordon injured im sure he would of been before minni and than there is gidley who i will leave out of the mix....So potentialy Hayne had slipped down to about 5th or 6th best.If i was jarryd id find it hard to swallow.
Does anyone think he will start at fullback 2nd game?

I think Hayne's a pretty good choice on the wing, to be honest.

At fullback he isn't able to take intercepts like he can at wing, and Ricky wouldn't allow him to be as involved in attack as he would like to be anyway.

At least on the wing he's more likely to get into one-on-one situations which is where he's at his best.

Plus if Ricky wants a fullback that hangs around the rucks and uses their support play as their man weapon - as opposed to a playmaking fullback - then I can understand his point of view.

It's not that Hayne isn't as good a fullback as the others, it's just that they are all of a similar style and Jarryd is different.

As a five-eight he should be on the wing so he isn't out of position, it's easy to understand really.

Yeah - right on.

Because Dugan never came into the line as second receiver in Origin I did he?

Oh crap. Yes he did.

Fact 1: Ricky can't coach --> evidence, Cronulla Sharks 2007-2010.
Fact 2: Ricky can't coach.
Fact 3: Ricky can't even give reasons for why he can't coach.

Almost every fullback these days chimes into the line as a 'playmaker' from time to time - as well as running off their halves. Hayne just so happens to be the best in the comp at chiming in as "playmaker" - so he is penalized for it by not being selected in a position where his strength might be best used.

If any sanity prevails, we'll see Hayne at FB in Origin II and Mini on the wing.

That was a set play bro. It's a different story to setting up at second receiver and calling for early ball.

Hayne doesn't 'chime in' so much as set up on one side of the ruck. Not that he can't play that way (he played a standard fullback role in Origin 2 & 3 last year as well as late in Origin 1 when he shifted to fullback).

Just like Dugan, Mini's too slow for the wing. Yow Yeh would get around him all day.

this is very true and probably the reason why Ricky hasn't chosen Farah at 9 even though he is the only hooker within kue of Smith. IMO NSW should build their squad around Hayne and Farah but they have chosen to build it around Pearce and Soward.

Either way a backline of Dugan/Stewart, Hayne, Gasnier, Lawrence and Uate will be very scary. All have exceptional speed (except Dugan) and all are very difficult to tackle. I would say having Dugan or Stewart at 1 and hayne on the wing is better then Hayne at 1 and Morris at 2.

Sadly for Hayne I think this is about as correct a theory as you'll get when trying to work out the master plans of Ricky.

Agreed. BUT it's almost game time & for the life of me I will find some way to get something positive out of all of this.

Something.

Somehow.

Surely.

Shit.

I think Ricky simply doesn't like Haynes style of play at fullback but why he didn't pick him on the wing was ridiculous. For years Qld have picked Slater, Wesser, Boyd, Falou and Inglis (while he was playing 5-8) on the wing and they picked Hunt at halfback.

You pick your best players and then adapt the team to it, Farah should be there IMO.

If I was picking a side today (with no injuries) I would go: Stewart, Dugan, Lawrence, Gasnier, Uate, Hayne, Mullen/Carney, Mannah, Farah, Poore, Bird, Lewis, Gallen: Idris, Watmough, Toleman, Merrin (if you go down that path).

That allows the best players in NSW to get their hands on the ball more: Stewart, Hayne, Farah and either Mullen or Carney. You have a quick pack with mobile backrowers and all 4 props are very quick off the mark. Soward and Pearce are good club players but arn't good enough to justify their place at origin you simply need two players that have good kicking games and Farah plus Mullen/Carney provide that with Hayne there to help.

Um what?

I think sometimes you need to watch more footy and talk a bit less Pou.

Dugan "chiming in as second receiver" happened a few times in the first half of the origin game (on the left side).

On Hayne: He stands 2 wide on the right AND left for Parra (no, not at the same time M.Eel) and looks to put it short to the gap, cut someone out, or step back inside and go himself.
The Dragons game I saw him throwing an inside ball too (from both sides) - which I haven't noticed much before.
He's chiming in.

Defensively Hayne was dreadful on the wing in Origin last year (not helped much by his center) - Yow Yeh may well go around him too.

Yeah I know. Remember him dropping that pass that hit him a bit high?

If that's 'chiming in' then the term has no meaning.

Key point.

Defenders are always limited by the blokes standing inside them. Hayne had Idris inside him. Enough said.

Hayne is big, fast and strong, and we know he can hit. He's also an instinctive football brain. If somebody gets outside him it's because the opposition created an overlap.

His defensive reads are just fine. Or have you forgotten all the intercepts he took from wing at Origin and club level?
