LOL at the Bryce Gibbs pic for comparison. Poor Bryce Gibbs looked so convincing playing at the ball and all too.

The cat deserved double the suspension he got. As for Hayne, thank f**k he is playing despite all the whinging and carrying on.

Matt Keating as well, people see an arm grabbed and an awkward tackle and claim chicken wing immediately.

The difference is Burt had the ball and was always going to score, Gibbs never had to commit to the dive. Hayne was chasing after a ball kicked ahead and dived in at the same time an Goodwin but was beaten. Both guys lead with the knees and were rightly charged but Gibbs was given a Grade 2 because he had ample time to pull out while Hayne didn't and thus was charged with a Grade 1. Hayne missed 0 weeks because of he had no carry over points but Gibbs had carry over points and contested it (no early plea downgrade).
If we look at Merrit who copped 1 week for studding Reddy in the face as he was planting the ball it pretty reasonable. Merrit lead with his feet (Hayne didn't thus not as bad) and he kicked Reddy in the face in the process causing a break in the skin. There have been 10 charges for similar offenses only 2 leading to suspension (Gibbs and Merrit) so I think it is not only the correct ruling but they are consistent. While 3 weeks for Gibbs is harsh penalty I think the chose the correct grading but Gibbs history blew out the penalty.
The Keating charge was all wrong, no intent and was simply trying to make a tackle and the bloke fell during it. I think he was charged only because of the scrutiny and it being a GF next week. Had this happened 3 weeks ago he does not get charged IMO.

yes, there are other differences with gibbs of course.

i'm not convinced he didn't have time to pull out either and he most certainly dived after goodwin. he could have stayed on his feet and jumped over the player or if he insisted on going down he could have led with his upper body.

if hayne's is a grade 1 there are going to be a lot of incidents not as bad as his now forced to be graded as grade 1. for example, the exact same thing as hayne did, but contact is with the back or side. IMO contact with the head, and heavy contact at that, should have ensured it was at least a grade 2.

also, why he and gibbs were not charged with dropping knees i dont know. what is that charge for then? they are completely different offences to the dangerous contact feet first offences slater style.

Matt Elliot made a good point on the Roast. Hayne was contesting the ball and genuinely trying to stop Goodwin from grounding it, it was still careless but a heat of the moment thing.

Gibbs wasn't contesting the ball. Burt was well over the try line before gibbs was anywhere near him. There was no reason or point for Gibbs to stick his knees out. Gibbs is also a complete f**kwit and the judiciary did the tigers a favour suspending him.

Hayne was never going to be in a position to contest the ball, he only ever went in to hit Goodwin after the try had been scored. Still, Hayne didn't deliberately go in to knee Goodwin in the head, he did try to get his knees out of the way and he doesn't deserve to miss the Grand Final.

Would have also felt sorry for Keating if he was suspended, but he is very lucky. It was a deliberate movement and even though Hindmarsh contributed to make it worse, Keating still should have recieved a higher grading. That kind of tackle should carry a big loading, any repeat offense should see an immediate suspension of at least 6 weeks. He should have been sent off for it.

Someone brought up gradings - I'm still miffed that Smith only got a grade 1 charge for trying to rip Thaiday's head off. It is the single worst grapple I've seen.

The biggest travesty of all is that Billy Slater has never been suspended or even charged for his "studs up" approach to saving tries. All he got was a stern warning.

Sad to see Keating even charged for what was a nothing accident, Hannants arm got caught up between Keats and Hindy and he decided to lie down like a bitch. Fair enough charge for Hayne, he was careless but did try to avoid contact with the knees unlike Gibbs. Also unlike Gibbs, he doesn't have eleven thousand previous offences and thus the system favours him...rightly so

who cares.

it will just give parra fans no excuses when the storm hand their arses to them on sunday.
mate none of us care if they win or lose, they made the grand final; and we r proud of what they have achieved this year, they achieved more then any other side in the NRL, win or lose it makes no difference, in our hearts they are winners!

Gibbs dropped his knees into a player ahead of him who already had the ball and dived in to score a try. Hayne was sliding into a contest where the ball was on the ground from a kick, so it wasn't as if he was lining Goodwin up for it. Pretty obvious distinction really.

Two more points to add.

If you look at the video (I don't have a link) of the incident you clearly see that Gibbs promotes his left knee prior to hitting Burt.

Haynes tries to avoid his knees hitting Goodwin and makes contact with his thigh/hip .
