Not sure that proves that Americans are smarter, that's just the impact of having a population > 320 million people. They pack the MCG to the rafters to watch some AFL games, I would hardly consider Victorians smarter.

AFL and NFL fans in general are just so much more passionate about their game then what NRL fans are.

Sport is about ppl, particularly children, exercising and socialising. It's ridiculous and wrong ppl travelling miles most weekends to watch professional sports teams. I sometimes travel to watch sport.

For sure, it is cultural. A lot of these US cities have a huge working class, similar to the UK and the NFL is their major outlet during Winter to take their mind off that. It is their release. Look at places like Buffalo, Green Bay.. Not big places by any stretch of the imagination, and they are so cold as well but they pack the crowds to the rafter's. It is pretty awesome..

Melbourne also known as bleak city has that sporting culture, probably not a lot else to do in Winter due to the colder weather. Sydney is different and I think partially due to the climate, people get out and about still. It is more similar to Paris, which also a huge city, had not taken to sport like other major European cities. It was actually more a union than soccer city until more recently with PSG being owned by billionaires and investing huge amounts of money. However compare it to London, Madrid, Munich, Rome etc and it is not really a major sporting city at all. Just too much else to do on a weekend than watch sport.

We all know that Rugby League is the best game and should appeal to the alpha male with it's mix of gladiatorial toughness and ball in hand skill, speed and you can even see Aussie Rules style marking for the ball and in my eyes is the best Football in the world compared to Soccer, NFL, AFL, GAA and Rugby Union and it should be bigger then all of them but what get's on my piss is when big crowds or the sporting headlines are about games like Golf, Snooker, Darts, F-1 and Nascar etc.

It would be interesting survey asking are we still as passionate about Rugby League as we were once were.

I have been a supporter of the game and Souths since 1967. In that time I have seen them win five premierships and produce some of the great players. Am I still as passionate about Souths and the game as I was a few years ago? To be quite honest, no I am not. Not sure why either.

My favourite sport now is the NFL and favourite team is the Dallas Cowboys.

If a longtime fan like I have changed then maybe so have others.

i don't think proper rl fans are any less passionate it's just that rugby league is a relatively small niche sport. It hasn't been able to broaden its appeal significantly to the broader cross section of society in terms of class and multi cultures. A big part of this imo is the lack of focus on international competition. Supporting your country brings in all walks of life and sadly RL has never really been good at making the kangaroos, kiwis etc massive brands that non rl fans would get behind.

In terms of Sydney you have clubs that have grown out of small suburban catchments. Aside from London metropolis and Melbourne I struggle to think of any other city in the world with so many teams in one city. There are only so many sports fans and only so many of them will be interested in rl.

Finally throw in crap scheduling, crap weather, crap,stadiums etc and you get your current crowd avg which hasn't changed hardly in a decade of 15k or so.

The notion that Sydney is some megatropolis of culture, great winter weather and interesting things to do on a weekend so that is why people don't go to nrl is a furphy that doesn't back up when you look at cities like Milan, Barcelona etc who are much more of those things yet pack out their sports stadiums.
