I'm not gonna pay for a cheap nasty service. I'd pay good money ($150) for an NRL service that was anywhere near NFL Gamepass.

As it stands, internet streams are often a better option than NRL Digital for $80.

The overseas online LiveStream service is far better than the local Telstra app.

Why they don't offer this locally? Is Gamepass offered in the US

Unfortunately I think an NRL run streaming service would probably be an impossibility. Even if they managed to get every single person who normally watches Monday night footy to subscribe at $250 a pop they would still only be pulling in $70-80 million a year.... Well down on what a pay TV provider would pay and that before taking into account production costs.

I'd imagine they would get extra money obviously putting ads into the coverage of course, so they could make up the difference possibly, but it seems unlikely for the NRL to ever host its own game pass service unfortunately.

Much more likely that someone like google or Bein would be able to monetise it and provide such a service.

It's blacked out in local markets. So you can't stream Giants games in New York, or Patriots games in Boston

Well it currently exists. It's just currently completely gimped. I'm not overly concerned who runs it. But there's absolutely no excuse for it not to have HD, full screen, and be reliably smooth.

The lack of full screen is the most frustrating part at the moment.. it's purposely bad to encourage Fox subs.

I'd say the excuse is to keep some exclusivity to whoever wants to pay for the rights to show those games themselves. Streaming HD would quadruple costs in terms of bandwidth requirements as well.

Where we will finally see a good streaming service will be if/when a Bein type service obtains the rights, and they only offer sports on their subscriptions so have no issue allowing streaming as a part of their package while Foxsports don't want to give people any ability to access their games without having a Foxtel subscription to a bunch of other crap

Costs have nothing to do with it, as you say, it's all about exclusivity in the current deal.

If Smith is as smart as he thinks he is, he'll have looked at the products major American sports are offering. Nothing except a high quality service is going to get the viewers required for big $ in future.

If Hayne makes the team I'll make an effort to sit through any game televised in which he plays . . . won't be easy but listening to sanctimonious Yanks being amazed at what other people on the planet can do will be worth the boredom

Looks like Channel 7 are going to try to show the trial match this weekend, as well as the Hayne games.

Now they are talking about a more specific San Francisco 49ers schedule of games that may even include Sunday’s trial game against the Denver Broncos, although it remains a longshot.
A seven spokesman confirmed last night the network was in communication with the NFL about the trial game in Colorado this weekend and all 49ers games this season
The network uses its digital high definition channel 7Mate to show regular-season NFL games.
“We’re obviously aware of the great interest in Jarryd and we’re expecting an answer from the NFL in next few days,” the spokesman said.

the 49ers coach should have some plays for Hayne to pass backwards called a lateral pass like League..

It's pretty hilarious. On my Facebook there's AFL fans hijacking posts about Hayne saying if he can do it imagine how good 'insert afl player that ive never heard of' would be.

The probably mean the alf players would make good cheerleaders.

Tbh his range of skills are wasted in such a specialised game.. he could do it all in RL

Agreed....

If he thought he was bored playing NRL, what will it be like for him playing a game where he only has to take part on the field in 1 or 2 disciplines out of a whole range of them across the park? If he makes the 53 man roster and plays a full season, he will have proved to himself and everyone that he could do it... but he could be watching from the sideline in the NFL watching players in other specialised positions thinking to himself "Geez, I could do that too, they don't need a 53 man roster while I'm here, I could have saved them 7 or 8 salaries!"

Don't be surprised to see him riding a bike in the French Alps next northern summer in Le Tour or taking down a bull in a fight somewhere in Spain...

Whatever happens, it has already been a fantastic ride. It's going to make a ripping documentary. That's where he'll probably end up making the most of his money in the long term. I'm sure I read in the first few days after he announced his defection to NFL that there would be a film crew accompanying him to chart his progress in his quest to make it. If Beavis was smart he will have made sure they kept all the rights etc for any doco and he'll rake it in for years to come...
