I just found this exclusive from the Telegraph dated 28.9.14. Wow. What an exclusive:

The Sunday Telegraph can exclusively reveal the former Newcastle forward, currently serving a jail term for assault, has knocked back deals from the Knights, the Broncos and the Rabbitohs, and will join the Panthers next year.

Packer's a first-rate grub, and I'm actually embarrassed that the coach of the club I love would try to minimise what Packer did. Packer punched a guy, and whilst he was lying motionless on the ground punched him in the face several times, then stood up and stomped on his head. Twelve months was less than he deserved, in my opinion, and it shows how far our great club has sunk that we find ourselves in a position where we have to sign a grub like this bloke.

See....damned if we do, damned if we don't.

The usual suspects would be on here whinging about why haven't we signed him? :sarcasm:

Agree, he's not even that good. but that's a minor issue really.

First of all, and most importantly, I think it is shameful that our club has even considered signing Russell Packer. The sentencing magistrate described his vicious assault as ?cowardly and deplorable?. That we are looking to bring him into our club at all signifies just how low we have fallen.

To amplify the already deafening shrieks of desperation, we have signed him while he?s still in prison! He hasn?t even completed half of his two year sentence and we?re throwing big money offers at him.

Then, we have a person employed in a senior role within our club - the head coach ? publicly and deliberately minimising and playing down the violent attack as ?unfortunate?. What Packer did was in no way unfortunate. If you need a memory refresh, here you go:

He was ejected from Hotel Chambers due to intoxication.
He failed to leave the licensed premises as he sat just outside, instead of beyond the 50m required perimeter.
He then stole two cigarettes from a woman, which led to an argument with a man.
The argument turned physical. He punched the victim a number of times before throwing an uppercut and knocking him down.
As the victim lay on the ground motionless Packer stomped on his face.
The victim was unconscious for 40 seconds and suffered two fractures to his face.
How unfortunate.

Clearly, with this whole embarrassing spiel, Mary was attempting to pressure the NRL into letting Packer play asap (again reeks of desperation). The hubris is astonishing. A rookie coach with an ignominious coaching record, who so far in the top job has managed only to steer a team from 11th to 11th, before alienating two of his best players. This guy is trying to tell the NRL administration what to do? That he would attempt it is mind-bogglingly stupid, but to bumble and fumble the attempt it in an excruciating, offensive manner is a hundred times worse.

Excellent post ,Grouch.

good blokes don't make good coaches it seems - all we heard about Price was how nice he was and we saw where that ended. Bennett, Hasler and Bellamy are all undesirable humans, particularly the last two. McGregor certainly appears to be a right di(khead...lets hope he proves himself as a good coach as good bloke is off the table it seems.

Agree with many on here that is comments were unfortunate and ill informed.

But seriously, are we really relying on Mary as the yardstick for what is wrong and right with society?? His role is to coach his footy team and clearly he believes his team is better with Packer in it. Hence, he is doing all he can to make this happen.

I don't rely on Mary to determine my moral compass and neither should anyone on here. If we ever had a chat at a pub, I'd tell him what I think of Packer and what he did and he can argue all he likes. It's not like there no other grubs in our game. Unfortunately, our game is littered with woman bashers, drink drivers, drug cheats, gamblers, alleged rapists...you name it, and celebrated coaches publicly back these players, as they want their teams to succeed.

To single out Mary and Packer in this instance is absurd.

Despite all the self righteousness in here, i cant wait until we sign Oacker if it comes to pass. Sure, he commited a disgraceful act, but if the courts decide he has done his time as rehabilitation then thats good enough for me. And as far as the football team goes - and lets face it, thats the reason I have any invested interest whatsoever - he would add a lot to what is current a shameful looking pack.

What shits me however (apart from the ridiculous comments from Mary) is that the club seems to be putting all its eggs in that basket. While we focus on Packer and possibility of getting him, there have been plenty of big forwards changing clubs that we really could have used...Kennedy, Hannant, Gavet, FPN. And now it looks like Finucane could be squeezes out of the club who just f**ked us for our best player. Why are we waiting on Russell when an equally good (if not better) forward option deserves our attention.

Indeed! Add costigan and to a Lesser extent Antonio kaufusi. We are just standing around waiting for the jail bird who is probably not going to be allowed to play next year instead of looking at other options.

What about the oldest Burgess, who didn't make the 17 for the GF. Why haven't we targeted someone like him? I bet he is willing to prove he is just or perhaps almost as good as his younger brothers.

This is starting to s$&t me because I know come round 1 next year, with packer not allowed to play, they'll have another excuse up their sleeve why the team is not performing!

Giboz, couldn't agree more.

Mary has a job to do and if he believes it'll work better with Packer then it's the right thing. Speaking out before Packer is released puts the issue squarely on the NRL's plate and affords a better opportunity for an earlier resolution, in my books that's a smart move!
