Heads up boys, we could have a player boycott on our hands

Basically, rumblings around the Players Association are that they aren't happy with the fact that the new cap will be 1.5 million lower then what they asked for. Therefore, there is talk that the All Stars game will be boycotted.

Not that THAT is a huge deal, but if they do and yield no results, the regular season could be next. I'll tell you one thing though, if they want any credibility at all, they better not ask Israel Folau and SBW to put a face to it.

http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/cap-fight-is-coming-to-a-head/story-e6frep5x-1226527024052

TENSIONS are set to reach breaking point today with the ARL Commission expected not to budge on their $5 million salary cap for 2013 - $1.5 million less than the figure the Rugby League Players Association is demanding.

Kangaroos skipper Cameron Smith will join Jarryd Hayne, Tim Mannah, Robbie Farah, Mick Crocker and Clint Newton in a bid to plead the RLPA's case for a cap rise next year and beyond.
Players are demanding they receive their fair share from the game after the $1 billion five-year TV deal was struck by the ARLC in August.
Any cap increase would pave the way for Israel Folau to return to the NRL, and allow Manly to register the contract of Brett Stewart.
Cap stoush may lead to All Star boycott
Stewart's teammate Jamie Lyon yesterday supported an All Stars game boycott if the ARLC refused to play ball, a drastic option which had been discussed by senior players and revealed by The Daily Telegraph yesterday.

ARLC acting chief executive Shane Mattiske said yesterday that a $5 million cap was set back in March so clubs could plan their rosters for 2013. Mattiske said the RLPA had sought a higher figure, and it was something they would discuss today at Rugby League Central. Canterbury CEO Todd Greenberg will represent the clubs.
"We've got a $5 million cap that we're working to, and we're very focused now on agreeing whether there's any addition to that money for 2013," Mattiske said. "We also want to lock in the years beyond that."

Has a major boycott ever happened? It will be interesting to see how this develops, as i think the players have a case here.

Cap should have been sorted out a long time ago. Ridiculous some clubs are a month into pre-season and we're still talking about the final figure.

No, never, unless you count the Super League War as some sort of pseudo-player boycott.

It's a testiment to the new T.V deal that this has even come up. The players have never threatened such action before in this fashion because they knew the kitty wasn't big enough to justify their argument.

Not anymore. Now they want a bigger piece of the pie. The numerous cases of players walking away to the U.K or to other codes will be used as leverage. "How much am I and my talents worth to you?" is what they'll ask and I'm not sure if the NRL will have a suitable enough answer for them, at least for now.

I would call SL a boycott
A massive one .

There were even a few games that didn't get played from memory.
Half the comp walked out.

Sounds like the Storm players could get a pretty easy start to the year with the boycotts they're potentially involved in.

Considering the charitable aspect of the All Star game, boycotting that would not reflect well on the players.

Though it sounds like a news ltd. construct more than anything else.

You can count on Clint Newton to be involved in this. The useless hack always had an inflated opinion of himself when in reality he should have spent his career as a minimum wage depth player at best. Any cap increase shouldn't result in a higher salary for that deluded nuffy.

Nothing new here.
Cameron Smith wanting more money - common knowledge.
Hayne came out a few years ago and told us all he should be payed more, etc.

Won't 9 be pissed if a reserve grade "all stars" team ran on the field next year.

Won't happen though as Desert Qlder said, it's a game for charity and it won't look good for the players

We're always hearing how the RLPA is fighting for the little guys and not just the stars. I think we should give them something. But call their bluff and give it all to them as a raise in the minimum wage rather than a top up for the Greg Inglis's or a free pass to sign Israel Folau.

They should boycott on the grounds of 'gross f**king incompetence of the NRL/ARL/whoever the hell actually runs the game (ch. 9?)"

The way that changes are handled in Rugby League is abysmal and simply amateur hour. Video refs, shoulder charge, changes to rules, not knowing the salary cap, the draw for next year, channel 9 running the show, the seeming inconsistency of the policing of the cap, the list goes on and on. Any player with an ounce of intelligence would either a) be frustrated, b) leave, or c) rort the system.

I'm a Parra fan and I'm starting to see why the Storm guys did what they did. And why Superleague happened. Because nothing changes and the administrators are f**king clowns.

this makes the situation interesting. The ARLC and the clubs that aren't currently having salary cap dramas voted that 5m is acceptable for next year.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...ut-increase-in-salary-cap-20121129-2ais3.html

The move will come after NRL interim chief executive Shane Mattiske's concession on Thursday the administration was not bound to a $5 million salary cap for next year. However the potential for breathing room has been clouded by the clubs, who are understood to have voted during a chief executives meeting on Wednesday for the cap to be set at $5 million, flying in the face of the players.
It is believed only two club bosses voted in favour of the cap rising from $5 million; Parramatta, who are trying to secure Israel Folau, and Manly, who are in negotiations with salary cap auditor Ian Schubert over the registration of fullback Brett Stewart's contract.

The players should get paid more.... increase the salary cap an extra $1.5 mill. The extra $ should be paid on first grade game appearances since
contracts have signed on the basis of a 5 mill cap.

24 games x 17 players = 408

1,500,000 / 408 = $3676 per appearance

Some guys who are on $55,000 can more than double their wage if they're in
first grade all year. Its the fairest way to distribute the $

Course they are!

If you leave decisions until the last minute and allow the clubs too much say then self-interest will always play a part. It's f**king nonsense that this is happening now.

The only clubs wanting an immediate salary cap increase are the ones that didn't handle their player retention and/or recruitment properly.
Why should the clubs that did be disadvantaged because of the ineptitude of those that didn't.
