Heads up boys, we could have a player boycott on our hands

moving the salary cap up just artificially increases the players wages.

Save the money spend it on promotion of the NRL and on junior rugby league.

It doesn't "artificially" do anything. It moves up to reflect the increased income in the game. Putting money into junior development is noble, and we need it to happen, but we also need to pay players their "worth", otherwise we create juniors who go to other codes.

Artificial increase would have been if it got raised for no reason. Revenue has more than doubled, the workers that are responsible for that revenue deserve an increase in wages. And there would be nothing artificial about it.

Next time you're up for an artificial pay rise tell your boss to put it into promoting his company and on his kids instead.

We're always hearing how the RLPA is fighting for the little guys and not just the stars. I think we should give them something. But call their bluff and give it all to them as a raise in the minimum wage rather than a top up for the Greg Inglis's or a free pass to sign Israel Folau.

Leigh.

Exactly.

I can't see why blokes in the top 25 players should be earning $55000, which by no means is good money considering the length of their careers and tolls on their bodies.

Bump the minimum wage up to $80k, at least.

Put the cap up if you must but DO NOT give clubs any more money. If they want the cap to rise they can pay for it themselves. They're already getting more than the cap in grants. And if the cap goes up the minumum wage must as well. In fact it should anyway.

considering that Ch9 delayed in actually paying the money.
Considering the players aren't worth what they are being paid now, given the size of the country and the market share that the NRL actually owns.

Oh and lets not forget that its a sport and its about not just the elite, the local clubs are struggling and deserve the money way before some tattooed halfwit and wants to wee away another huge wad of cash

what they are worth is an artificial amount determined by the salary cap.
What they are really worth based on the "real" size of the market not the increased revenue from increasing costs to the "fan" is a lot less than they are getting paid now.

nothing to do with physical toll...on how much you earn

as police and army risk their lives...

some elite sports people earn nothing

it a business so should be all based on revenue the game brings in... 50% should go to players...

Hmmm... Maybe the NRL should put the cap up, but not register any contracts until the end of February. Give other clubs some wiggle room to sign Folau or Stewart, or whoever else. Then after the other 15 clubs chuck their cap increase at Folau and he still wants to play at Parra, then so be it.

I hold nothing against Izzy, he only did what any one of us would have done.

Isn't that happening under the new deal?

I'm sure I read somewhere that clubs were starting to do this. May have just been the Raiders, though.
One of the targets for 2017 set under the ARLC's strategic plan is that 84% of NRL players will be "in education or career training".

18get paid $55k, get paid education/training, get to work out all day and play a sport you enjoy with mates, by 25 have the potential to be earning 1/4 mill plus. My heart is bleeding for them! Not like they can't have a second career when they turn 30!

If Clint Newton's power of negotiation is anything like his football ability, the RLPA is screwed

Remove the cap all together.

Rich teams like rorters and manly with no heart would be good for the game.

lol Manly have more heart than most teams in the comp, stuck tough through some tough times and a massive chunk of the squad have stuck together for an inordinate amount of time because of the culture of the club. Talk more shit please.

In these situations I don't usually agree with the players but I agree with them. The tv rights deal has gone up astronomically and a 5mill salary cap is a joke. I think it should be 6m at least.

I think it's really unfair on the players for the NRL to be taking advantage of them like this. Everyone and everything else gets paid but the players have to deal with a crappy 10-15% increase when the tv rights has more than doubled.

The NRL should give them a fair offer and if they don't I support all reasonable boycotts, including what it is suggested in this article.

Personally, paying stars the majority of income increases is a short sighted policy that will hamper the code with growing and prospering into the future

Look at the differences between Rugby Union and AFL over the past 20 years.

The ARU had massive pay days after a World Cup win and years of success and what did they do with their money? They invested it in the salaries of a few players who took their money and ran. Mostly back to Rugby League, where they'd been taken from in the first place.

The AFL spend a massive chunk of their money on grass roots development. Like it or not, and most of us here don't like it, the AFL spend their income rather wisely. The clubs are backed by strong memberships - something the NRL has taken note of and has sensibly invested time and money into promoting. Well supported clubs with active members are stronger for it.

However, a lot of the money from the television rights also goes into expanding their game. They know that if they get kids involved in playing the game they not only get players, they also cement support.

The NRL really needs to invest wisely in ensuring that junior clubs and schools are involved in all sorts of Rugby League related programs. That playing fields are maintained and that kids everywhere have a chance to play Rugby League, Oz Tag or any other version of Rugby League that is available.

Giving money to a the few at the expense of the majority is never a policy for success.

If TV rights have doubled, then the players should expect no more than 15% in salary increases - but all the junior clubs should expect their playing fields to be maintained and all the kids to have jumpers, balls and goal posts to use.

Why is it I keep hearing...

"WE ONLY HAVE 7-8 YEARS TO MAKE ANY MONEY "

Do they die after they retire ??

Most ex players of any note have parlayed their famous name into successful careers in business.

Do they expect to retire from all work at 34 and live off their earnings for 55 years... ???
