Yeah, I'm quite stunned by what some people somehow manage to classify as metal.

How the f**k are SOAD metal?

Def Leppard?

I have often wondered where SOAD fits.. I love their stuff, never get sick of it..

I don't know where you classify them but they're certainly not metal.

decent drummer, that's about it.

I can't keep up with what is metal now.. When i was at school and took a lot of notice of such things SOAD would have been metal along with the likes of Metallica & Megadeth.. Bands like Kreator, Slayer, Pantera etc etc were death metal..

It doesn't seem to be like that anymore.. I have watched shows that call them selves metal on Foxtel that throw in bands like QOTSA.. I wouldn't think they would be metal at any time..

Would you call Death Magnetic a metal album HD?

For the record, Toxicity is an awesome awesome album IMO..

Death Magnetic is definitely metal Mong. It's good, old-school thrash.

By the way, I don't really judge metal by how 'heavy' something is.

It's actually quite hard to define other than saying that metal fans - people that can actively state they listen to everything from Metallica to Cryptopsy to Darkthrone to In Flames - can easily tell you what is and isn't upon listening.

Unfortunately I have to admit that after years of denial that Slipknot is a metal band - as much as it embarrasses me to say so.

I do like the title track of Toxicity by the way Mong.

I used to listen from Metallica to Kreator and Slayer and the like.. Does that count?, the girls hate the heavier stuff in a big way so i don't get into it that much anymore except when neither are home..

I would still put SOAD in the metal category, there really isn't any where else for them to go.. Metal Opera perhaps??

I quite like them.. I hardly know anyone else who does... I often see 13 year old boys wearing their shirts though, that must be their demographic.. (although i see lots of Black Sabbath and old school Metallica shirts around on that age group as well which is pleasing)

Deer Dance, Needles, Psycho and Aerials are equally as good.. X is also awesome... Ahh f*ck it, pretty much the whole album is awesome !!

lol @ corncob rape.

metal has so many sub genres its hard to class what is and isnt metal.

slipknot are metal and korn are metal...tho some say "they arent metal they are nu-metal"...well its still metal...just because you dont like the band doenst meant they arent metal. (for the record not a fan of korn...dont mind some slipknot tho)

alot of "harcore" metal fans think 80's metallica, megadeth, pantera and slayer etc are the only real metal bands...which is bullsh*t.

my taste in metal goes through thrash to death metal to the more melodic type of stuff depends on the mood i spose.

Just to totally destroy the last of my metal street cred, the form of metal i miss is Glam Metal.. Being a teenager of the 80's i had a secret love of it.. Poison, Stryper, Crue, Ratt, Cinderella the list is endless.. :D

LOL @ all teenage metallers owning either a Metallica or a Nirvana T-shirt. That teenage dirtbag streotype will never die.

I don't understand this perception that metal music is heavy. A lot of Opeth's stuff isn't heavy, but they're metal.

Metal is a mindset. Like Hevy said - yes, Slipknot come under metal. But they're more "let's bounce around and play hard so the 13 year old kiddies think we're brutal" metal rather than metal with a purpose.

Someone once said metal has to be characterised by at least one guitar solo in the song. Not sure I completely agree with it, but it's a decent starting point. Difference between Metallica and Green Day is that Metallica's guitarrists will shred the axe in a sick solo, whereas Green Day will not. Generally.

But I, too, find myself struggling sometimes to categorise it. Apparently in some critics' views, Lamb Of God are now hardcore (wtf?) and Satyricon are metalcore (again - wtf?).
