At the end of the day people can categorise whatever they want as they want - I'll be perfectly happy enjoying my Burzum, Devin Townsend and November's Doom.

Dudes, you guys are taking this waaaay to seriously . . .

Nah, it's just developed into an interesting discussion because of the misconceptions many people have about what is and isn't metal.

Even funnier is when you ask someone what genre a band is and they say "Heavy metal".

I'm like "That doesn't tell me a f**king thing about it!!! How f**king general is that? Devin Townsend is metal and so is Burzum but they have NOTHING in common!!!!!"

But yes, I love talking metal.

It's hard to keep up with all the different types of metal HD.. I only use two types to describe it.. Just plain old metal, or thrash metal..

The only thing that makes it hard is when a band combines two or more genres strongly.

You can sometimes sorta tell when something is traditional heavy metal or whether it's gone off into a tangent to another genre. Love metal.

The other thing is sub-sub genres.

For example, Darkthrone and Cradle of Filth are both black metal but you couldn't say they were in any way similar.

I've seen lists of sub-sub genres that number in the thousands, which is a a bit silly because it's getting to a point where almost every band has their oen genre!

But yes, metal rules the world. In Demonaz we trust.

I don't see how SOAD could not be classified as metal.

Their first (self titled) album was heavy as f**k.

I too am confused now by the different genres. Most the punk/hardcore bands sound like bad pantera rip offs but aren't classified as metal?

weird.

That's because they're not metal.

SOAD are not metal although it's probably a bit harsh on them to classify them nu-metal. They're better than that.

I didn't think their first album was particularly heavy. As it is, you don't judge what is and isn't metal by how heavy it is.

And punk is definitely not metal either.

So if they're not metal - what are they?

They surely aren't alternative rock.

I just checked wiki and they have them labelled as alternative metal - WTF. They are definitely a metal band IMO.

I never seem to get the point of all the sub categories. I couldn't care less what style it is, if I like it, I'll listen to it.

I don't even know what alternative metal is. I just don't see that they've got anything in common with metal.

They're rock but as to what genres rock has I could't really say.

Extreme rock? Haha
