I didn't mind Layne, but they were hardly a super band imo. I always thought Soundgarden were the better band.

But that's me - AiC aren't bad, I just don't understand the love for them.

Soundgarden were certainly one of the exceptional bands of that ilk.

But Layne's voice was unique and haunting. Some truly great tracks.

Compare them to Nirvana, well, they're far better than Kurt and co.

But what we're all forgetting in this thread is that Devin Townsend is God.

I think some people just havent listened to enough alice in chains. I will admit some of their stuff is very depressing which may turn some people off. But they are far better than most so called rock music out now.

Trust me - compared to some of the stuff I listen to, AiC is not depressing.

I like them, but I don't rate them as highly as everyone else.

And yet you don't mind Hip Hop, which has nothing whatsoever to offer.

Go figure.
Just because it's not what you're into doesn't mean it has nothing to offer. You can find quality in all forms of music, obviously commercial pop garbage withstanding.

I used to listen to metal exclusively up until my early to mid 20's, now I find myself buying music from all forms ranging from roots, funk, hip hop, indie, alt rock and metal. If you pigeon hole yourself into one genre, you really miss out on some quality acts.

Or maybe I'm just getting soft as I get older.

I'm the same, I used to only listen to old school punk rock and metal.

Since about the age of 18 I started opening my mind and now I can listen to and appreciate almost anything (apart from the obviously manufactured commercial stuff).

Its quite funny reading them posts. I was also an exclusive rock/metal guy, then in my early 20's i started to branch into other forms of music.

Now however i've reached 30 my tastes are going back to more rock. The circle of life and all that. Maybe not the extreme stuff like black, thrash, death metal etc. Just classic tunes i used to listen to.

Its good to be home! :D

(It also helps that the pub 200 yards from my house was the local gay bar but closed and has since re-opened as the local biker/rock bar! Happy days for all except my liver!! )

I used to listen to punk and nu metal as a teen. I began to hate it by 17 or so and listened to metal. Haven't looked back, even though I guess you could say that, even though I like everything from thrash to death and everything else in between, I'm not a 'true' metal head because my favourite bands all seem to be metalcore.

Hmmmm. I was always rock as a kid. Since then I've gone through phases until I started to see that metal and jazz stand far above all other genres in regards to musicians.

Jazz tends to attract the absolute elite musicians while metal allows for the greatest diversity in creativity.

To be honest I listen to quite a few genres but at least a few of them have nothing whatsoever to offer - country, 'nu-metal' and hip hop/modern rap etc among them.

Hip Hop isn't all about gangster wannabes, some of them are actually quite good lyricists. Just like not all metal is about Satan or killing dragons.

If you want "musicians" then yeah, metal and jazz really are the cream of the crop. But music isn't just limited to how well they can play instruments.

Metal and Rock are always my favourites, but I have a whole range of music in my collection these days and listen to different types of music depending on my mood.

You and i are very similar in music tastes etc man. Im not a fan of "nu metal" these days...but it was due to listening to korn and sh*t back in the day that i got into metal. I am also really into metalcore/deathcore ...and i hate that sh*t when people say your only a real metal head if you are into bands who wear leather have big hair and have 10 minute f**king guitar solos! Im into thrash, black, death and all of its "core" variants.

lol korn and limp bizkit used to be my favourite bands back in high school (along with Slipknot, Disturbed, Spineshank, System of a Down etc)... i think the only bands i still listen to from those days would be Deftones, Killswitch Engage and sometimes DevilDriver.

a) I've never heard anyone say that
b) most of those bands aren't metal anyway

That is soooo 80's man!! :D

i was always told it was rar rar music that you cannot understand what the singer was going on about. Or it was just noise.

thinking about muppets that were around here growing up, people would attack you for being a rocker, and not wearing a pastel shirt. Then there was that famous day when 3 people wearing pink shirts picked a fight with a biker outside of a very packed bikers bar. A few police vans later and it was all sorted out. Happy days!!

I have a defones CD i still listen to, the first one (Adrenaline i think). Also Appetite by Gnr, except sweet child o mine. I hate that song in fake indie cool 'rock clubs'.

Slipknot/System of a down etc. are all still classed as new bands in my head. :D
