I would like to know how much nrl refs get paid. In all likelihood not enough to ensure high quality skilled humanoids. I watch union a bit (used to a lot being a kiwi and all) and whilst not perfect of course, their refs are 10x better than those of the nrl. Resolving this shit nrl ref issue may be simply a matter of throwing money at it.
One flag up one flag down for a conversion last night ffs. That’s nrl reffing in a nutshell.
Referees are on around 100k a year...you think about it, that's the minimum contract for a player
got no issue with 2 touchies having a difference of opinion on a close call like that, the rule book states the call goes to the ref, so it happens
The difference between NRL and all other sports and why the focus so much on the referee is because the referee is more involved in the processes of the match, Union/AFL/Soccer formations and speed are not controlled by the referee
in rugby league the referee controls the ruck speed as well as being in charge of setting the defensive line.
A problem is the NRL structure itself. there are 20 or so full time contracted referees, 16 needed for 8 games. in regards to injuries and the like a referee will not be dropped because there is no one to pick from unlike the old days when the competition was streamlines and reggies and first grade were under one banner
