Hoffman to Warriors

I'm a League man - I want the best for the game. The Warriors are NZ's shop-front window and they have done a miserable job at representing this country since its inception. History is on my side and I have not seen anything that tells me that on-field results are going to change any time soon!

Recruiting the wrong players, paying too much for them is part n parcel of Warrior history. To their credit, they've made many good recruitments as well, Maloney and Friend in recent times, but there's no denying that the negative side of the recruitment ledger is far greater than it should be.

My point here is to get people to question decisions, to get people to actually think about a lot of the choices this team makes because the history of this team requires that we do so.

But instead, what I'm seeing here on this board alone, is a lot of people either dodging or oblivious to the on-going issues that consistently hamper this club from reaching its true potential. Now the latter I can understand because not everyone had 30+ years of League, business, people experience behind their belt but the former - dodging issues - that is criminal, especially, again, for a club that has the poor history that it has.

At the moment I am not seeing anything from you other than attempts to dodge the hard questions. The more you do this the more I know that this team is going nowhere. Once again, one of the great things about League is that it mirrors life all too well and in this instance, it is like politics - I am here questioning the politicians but all I'm getting is "pr" speak in return.
ah I see I over thought it and miss judged you.
I thought with a nick name like Bengal that you were a Tigers fan with a negative agenda.
You seem passionate about your arguments. Still on the signing front , we're talking about Hoffman....if a lack of consistency is your main criticism with the Warriors ' import type' then that can't fairly be leveled at Hoffman.

The main reason I'm pleased with this signing is he fixes two very important roles in the team.

We have no effective left edge running backrow , Matulino has been doing a better job than Mannering , but neither player can get any where near what Hoffman does for Melbourne in that Role.

Hoffman takes hit up two , for the last ten years , Manu Vatuvei has owned that hit up , of late Laumape and Hurrell are being used.

This team gains a lot by having Hoffman to do the specialist forward work ( hit up two is the hardest in the game ) that reduces the load on our outside backs by a third.

You're looking at a player that will free up the harder part of several outside backs game , and keep Mannering out of the left edge attack.

As for how much that costs....there are pages of third party agreement discussions , at the end of the day the Warriors can afford to pay large overs of unregistered money.

They would be foolish not to use that option.....the past is the past....it's new buying model and we're talking new players that have NRL credibility .....more importantly they 'fix' some of the holes in our current style of play.

?Balmain? Tigers man well before the Warriors came to be, but like most kiwis; have more than a soft spot for the Warriors.

This thread is about a player but it is what this signing represents that is my main focus. The Warriors are consistently inconsistent and I blame management for that first and foremost and this signing doesn?t give me any reason to believe that things are going to change

This is more like it ? thorough and interesting break down.

This is more my area of expertise ? paying overs on top of the overs already a common practice for this team does not make good business sense. More importantly, I am uncomfortable with what appears to be an unlimited supply of third party agreements. This is not good for the competition, henceforth the game, and the game should come first - period!

They would be foolish not to use that option.....the past is the past....it's new buying model and we're talking new players that have NRL credibility .....more importantly they 'fix' some of the holes in our current style of play.
These holes should not be there in the first place but again, that pales in comparison to the undermining of the salary cap and the clear-as-day implications that has for the game.

Indeed.

Kia Ora

Your brother was a good man.

I grew up in the Kia Ora club catchment (Awapuni), but had no involvement with local league. Not sure why (my father's a West Coast/Greymouth leaguie, my late uncle was a fanatical Wellington league administrator).

Probably because union was such a force in the Manawatu in those days ('70s/early '80s) and league was such a 'poor cousin'.

It is great to hear how the Kia Ora club has grown from humble beginnings into such a strong community sporting organisation. Which is due to the hard work and selfless nature of its volunteers, including your brother.

Best regards.

Blair

Sorry for your loss too...

Back on track - Hoffman remains a current SOO player, at a guess he'd only be the 3rd current Origin player we've signed (Price, Tate being the other two).

Others, off the top of my head, Alexander, Lilyman, Campion were former origin players (and Brandy past his best.. and Neilsen incredibly lucky to have played at that level

I'm pretty sure Nielsen played Origin 3 in 2012 so you could argue he could have been deemed a "current Origin player" :D

Not sure if Hoffman would have made the cut this year had Cordner and Bird been available.

The talk was always that he'd be in - Scott would drop first...

Anyhow, everyone speaks highly of him, and he's certainly a quality player

Well if they had both Bird and Cordner that'd be two that'd get shown the door.

I'm not Daley though.

Marsh? Or was SOO After he signed with us?

Be interesting to see how our forward pack lines up next year.

Pretty sure if they had both Bird and Cordner then Scott & Williams would be the two out. If they had Glenn Stewart also THEN Hoffman would maybe not make it since Luke Lewis has more utility value. Him vs Watmough, and Watmough probably wins on account of playing through the centre more.

Regardless we shouldn't get caught up in specifics - the general point holds true... it's very good company to be in (and getting selected over). Unlike Nielsen (who was next in line after him? a still very green O'Neill?).

What Hoffman also brings to your club is great clubmanship (is there such a word?) as well...great leadership, been a real statesman for Storm & he'll take his playing & off-field roles very seriously for the Warriors

Trivia:

There were a number of Kiwi Warriors playing in the Superleague rebel SOO series of course....the one where we got ripped off by the Ref stopping a a late NZ Try to prevent Millions in losses for a NZ final.

An anomaly of the History books , though they did play the real Queensland team with the majority of the Queensland side being Broncos......Nth Queensland the Dogs and Canberra all sported significant Queensland Reps in the Superleague.

the ARL SOO was equally as limited in it's relevance that year since it had a patch work Queensland team in lieu of the Kiwis playing the real one.

Thanks very much Blair - greatly appreciated. Cheers JJ also.

Back on track, looking forward to seeing Hoffman here now, plenty of folk seem to think he has what we need. His leadership skills is something I wasn't aware of, so I'll give him a big thumbs up for that.
