April 28 1998.

Hopoate fined and suspended for 8 weeks for turning up for training in an unfit state.

Youve never turned up to work a tad hung over i know i have a few times :p

No, I haven't.

And I'm not even a high profile Footballer who "works" for 20 hours a week being paid to do something most of us would pay to do.

Yet he screwed it up time and time again.

Fine $5,000 for a nightclub "incident".

*edit - not needed* who of us here can say they have never been in a fight at a pub or have an argument that all this proberbly was.

That wasn't the point of your post. You said it was all on-field.

The bloke is a jerk, period.

Some of you people here are absolutely disgraceful - you are worse than him.

Regardless of what he has done, the man has apologised and expressed that he wants to live a normal life and look after his family.

Leave him be, FFS.

First of all, if he reads LU, more fool him.

Second of all, it's the main news of the week, would you prefer everyone ignore it?

What about the papers, radio, TV, ask them to do the same.

And apologies schmologies, he's made them before and gone back to form again every time.

He's been hounded enough. Yes, he did the wrong thing, but it's over now, he's apologised, said his farewell and he's gone.

Wishing some of the things that were mentioned here upon him makes a few people here worse than he ever was.

Some of you (not you EA) need to f**king grow up.

At least the bloke apologised. EVen if it doesn't make it better he still did. Something Danny Williams failed to do.

Hoppa is a great person off the field. He has always made time for his young fans and still coaches a local Manly team. His passion on the field has been great, he would do anything for the Manly club.

I'll always remember how the crowd at Brookie always seemed to rise whenever John touched the ball. Yes he made stupid mistakes and ultimately deserved to be sacked, but I for one appreciate the memories and the commitment he played with.

Agreed that some of it has been pretty harsh. But it was always going to happen. Blokes like Hoppa polarise supporters.

And I do need to grow up. lol

A nice message to end the Hopoate chapter of Rugby League. Again, best wishes to you and your family, enjoy retirement. I am sure Manly fans thankyou for your service to the club over the last 15+ years. Apart from the "brain explosions", I have enjoyed watching your career on the wing.

There was an obvious problem in the mindset of John Hopoate when he went onto the field, with that burden now off him, I would hope the Rugby League public will be able to allow him to seek success off the field and let the past remain just that.

Keep in mind, another nutcase that finds it just dandy to chastise Hoppa in the RLW (I am talking about Mark Geyer) is now lauded for his input into Rugby League and his past indiscretions have been all but forgotten. I hope we can say the same for Hoppa if a few years time.

Nah...he can stick his apology fair up his arse and use his finger to do it if it helps. I've heard it all before and his apologies mean nothing.

It was worse than Greg Bird. Danny Williams deserved more than what he got. That was just plain thuggery.
