Timana Tahu knew he would be do a haka but he never imagined it would be in his underwear.
The newest New Zealand Maori recruit was forced to strip down and perform a light-hearted haka with other fresh faced Kiwis at North Harbour Stadium on Wednesday.
'I thought the boys were geeing me up and having a laugh but then we ended up doing it,' Tahu said with a bashful smirk after he had dressed. 'It's tradition. It's been going on for years. It brings the players together.'
'I think everyone was shocked. They didn't know I knew it. That's something I grew up with. My old man taught me when I was a little kid. Plus every time the Kiwis or All Blacks play Australia that's always the highlight. I sit my little son down infront of the TV.'
Australian-born Tahu will partner captain Clinton Toopi in the Maori centres when they meet England in a Four Nations warm-up at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday. In doing so, he will fulfil a life-long dream and tribute to his New Zealand-born father Tom, who died in 2003.
He sports a North Island Maori tattoo on his left shoulder as a remembrance.
The 29-year-old part Aboriginal met the Maori King and grasped aspects of his culture that were foreign to him while in New Zealand this week.
'I grew up around an aboriginal community. For me it's getting back to my culture, coming back to New Zealand and putting on my jersey with pride,' the dual Australian international, who this season returned from a two-year rugby union stint, said.
'I always wanted to do it. Origin was always in the way of things.'
Tahu felt Origin was the pinnacle of rugby league but the Kiwis' increased competitiveness was changing that.
'I feel like I'm at the peak of my career. I didn't want to come over here and play for the Maoris with old legs and look stupid,' he said.
England has requested they be allowed to use 24 players in the match, which suggest they may be taking the game lightly. The Maori are certainly not.
'We're not just there to be a team to walk over,' Tahu said. 'It's not going to be a training run. I take this stuff seriously. I'm preparing exactly the same as I would for an international or representative game.'
The time away from Australia allowed Tahu to escape racial allegations against him, but also saw him link with new Parramatta Eels and Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney.
'It's going to be good having Steve coming over,' he said. 'Just hearing from the players, he's a good coach. He's got a bond with the boys. It's something I'm hoping to look forward to next year. These are my last few years of playing football and I want to enjoy it.'
