Horribly Over-Rated Bands

Yes, this probably has been done before. Never seen it in my year of posting though.

The obvious ones to start with (in a personal opinion) would be:

- U2
- Coldplay
- Nirvana
- Rage Against The Machine
- Kings Of Leon
- Smashing Pumpkins
- Metallica
- Green Day

How exactly do you define overrated?

For example, Metallica has been around for well over 20 years and are regarded as one of the best heavy bands of all time.

It looks like you're just doing a list of popular bands that you don't like. That doesnt mean they're overrated.

Which is why I used the word opinion. So I'm asking you, who do you "find" that is over-rated personally?

funny hey.

I will give him Coldplay but I am taking Nirvana , U2 and Metallica off him.

I have never really seen what the big deal is with Pearl Jam.
I like them
I have even seen them
..but I have never in my life purposely put on one of their CD's.
I think it was the album cover for TEN that turned me off them right from the start.

Yes I understand what an opinion is, i was asking you how you define the term "horribly overrated". Im interested to hear how some of the bands youve listed fit into that category.

Fair enough mate. On the same level with you now. I'm not having a go at anyone's music taste in this thread, for the record.

With U2 and Coldplay, I find it's just generic music with very little change between a portion of their songs. Kings Of Leon and Green Day fit the same, in a more modern era

Metallica, well, I hear too many people say stuff like "they're the best heavy metal band", and though I like some of their stuff, they should never fit the title.

Although with the whole "listing popular bands I dont like" thing, well the Nirvana/RATM/Pumpkins thing you could be right, admittedly. I do like a portion of songs from each band, but I still can't see what the fuss is all about with grunge. Nickelback could fit, again, into a modern feeling of this.

But, now I'm interested to hear in your opinion.

Metallica aren't overrated - they just went through a crap period.

I also quite enjoy RATM and I don't think anyone ever said they were the greatest band around.

The rest I certainly agree with.

Kings of Leon for a bit there... hype seems to have died down.

Muse x 1000.

Probably gonna get a pounding for this one but I'm yet to see what the fuss is with the Rolling Stones.
Should a bands/arists longevity be a factor in them being over or underrated?

U2 have probably changed the most of all bands spanning that long a career.
Look at the massive change from rattle and hum to Achtung baby.

Recent U2 I would agree with. Up to and including Achtung baby I thought they were a lot better, with the odd good song since.

Never understood the near worship some have for Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil.

Agree with the earlier poster about Rolling Stones as well.

Kings of Leon - All their songs sound the same, and none of them are great. For me, they're a band who had a big hit song and the hype that came after it was sickening. I'd be happy to never hear another song of theirs.

Muse - I must have been living in a cave when this band became the biggest thing in music. To hear them compared to some of the best bands in history is just plain insulting to music.

Radiohead - Much like Kings of Leon in that all of their songs sound the same, i've listened to their so called hits and nearly blew my brains out from boredom. I cannot understand their popularity. They had something like 4 songs very high up in the list in JJJ's hottest 100 of all time, all f**king time.
