They're not. Comparing "popularity" when you equate being someone's second team with the passion of someone dedicated primarily to a club. It is laughable. It's apples and oranges. By some misleading metrics the Swans can also be made to look like one of the biggest clubs in Australia. They're also not.
Both clubs have had a lot of success over a generation, both clubs are the only or primary team in a major city that is foreign to their code. They're generally liked by many but loved by relatively few compared to the true big clubs in their respective codes.
The Storm are not as big as Brisbane or the big Sydney clubs. The Swans are not as big as the big Melbourne clubs or West Coast. The Storm are a second team for a lot of AFL fans like the Swans are a second team for a lot of NRL fans. This usually means bigger than usual ratings in big finals games but it does not convert to memberships or daily/weekly obessive following like true primary fans.
