How are Storm the most popular club?

They're not. Comparing "popularity" when you equate being someone's second team with the passion of someone dedicated primarily to a club. It is laughable. It's apples and oranges. By some misleading metrics the Swans can also be made to look like one of the biggest clubs in Australia. They're also not.

Both clubs have had a lot of success over a generation, both clubs are the only or primary team in a major city that is foreign to their code. They're generally liked by many but loved by relatively few compared to the true big clubs in their respective codes.

The Storm are not as big as Brisbane or the big Sydney clubs. The Swans are not as big as the big Melbourne clubs or West Coast. The Storm are a second team for a lot of AFL fans like the Swans are a second team for a lot of NRL fans. This usually means bigger than usual ratings in big finals games but it does not convert to memberships or daily/weekly obessive following like true primary fans.

So not wrong then, even according to the numbers you provided. After an incredible run of success that will not last forever...they're 15% behind the Eels who have had little success. Not to mention not even every club updates those numbers so they're hardly a great reliable indicator. What I said stands. Storm and Swans grand finals always rate well as they do have a large level of less intense support but they are in no way behemoths compared to true big clubs with large passionate fanbases. Broncos/Eels/Souths/Dragons/Dogs in NRL and Tigers/Pies/Bombers/Blues/Eagles in AFL.

They know that they aren’t truly the most supported. Otherwise the CEO wouldn’t be crying about the prelim crashing with the kick-and-giggle-GF.

Cry?

You'd think it would be plainly obvious to at least one f**kwit at the NRL to have thought, "the AFL GF is on saturday night 25/9 - let's not schedule a game in that time slot, let alone a game involving the team from the state that rabidly follows the sport!" Even more damning is even when a first request was put in to have it moved, the NRL said no!

Yeah, maybe it's a ploy to deter folks who prefer rugby league from settling in to watch the AFL GF, but Melbourne numbers for a Storm prelim would be paltry up against the AFL GF with two Melbourne metro teams involved.

I don't understand why Melbourne are playing Saturday anyway. They're minor premiers, they're entitled to the extra day's recovery - should they win the game that is. The NRL always f**k up the scheduling of the first week of finals which then affects week 3 when the winning semi-finalists switch prelims.

Except Swans and Storm both have large membership numbers.
Storm are one of the most watched clubs on TV, have a fanbase across the country and one of the largest avg attendances, and yes helped by a winning team. Successful on and off the field. All that in a fraction of the existence time of some heartland clubs. One of the games better investments.

Did you miss that thread I posted awhile ago about the former wooden spooners turning a big profit regardless?
Are you telling me that Broncos tv audiences, memberships and attendances are not down from their heyday? Broncos profits up on the back of increased NRL grant and Govt pay outs?

Bandwagon Broncos fans who dropped their team as soon as they became shit and Poms from Perth who don’t have a team and chose the team on top.

haha picked them in '99 when I landed on these fair shores and needed a team to cheer in the GF, mainly chose them as they had links to the Reds, were an actual expansion club and after decades booing St Helens couldn't bring myself to cheer a team called St's lol. Been a mostly great choice!

Which translates to broadcast rights value which is what the sport survives and thrives on.

Which makes the NRL decision to schedule a Melbourne prelim at the same time as the AFL GF so ridiculous, and then insane when they refused to re-schedule it at Melbourne Storm's request.

you think its the NRL's decision? haha. NRL is ruled by TV, they make the decisions for their good, not the games! You can blame the NRL for giving up its control to the tv masters though.

Yet those clubs exist and will continue to well into the future. Happy days.

So passionate that they dont buy merch, dont go to games and dont become members? How are you measuring these so called passionate fans if it isnt by the numbers who actually do something to support the club? Not syaing it isnt true but Id like to know by what metrics you are measuring.
