The question they should be asking is ‘Which football club (any code) do you support?’. Watch the Storm, Swans, GWS and Lions plummet down towards the bottom of the list.

Top clubs would be
1. Broncos
Daylight
2. Collingwood
3. West Coast
4. Adelaide
5. Essendon
Daylight

Bottom clubs
30. Brisbane Lions
31. Storm
32. GWS
33. GC Titans
34. GC Suns

Storm is below all Vic AFL clubs, even factoring in their fans in Qld. Swans would be mid table. I don’t know enough about Union or soccer clubs to factor them in.
“Support” is a very subjective term. If someone just watches the club when they are in a final are they classed as a supporter? If they have an affinity to a club but never actually watch them are they a supporter? I’d suggest this poll used a verrrrry broad definitial to come up with those figures lol.

the only real actual data re fan base worth considering is memberships, merch sales and attendances. Even tv audiences are largely made up of neutrals.

We already have the metrics for attendances and memberships. Merch sales would be in the annual reports.

like every club that turns to sht you mean?

Not in the AFL. They still generally have great turn outs compared to the NRL. They know the value in developing juniors, expansion into new territories, saturation media coverage and promotion and getting the big end of town to love your sport, invest in it and promote it.

Bellamy and co. efficiently turn numpties into solid first graders and solid first graders into rep players, you gotta respect that though.

The merkins.

The reason he turns nuffties into solid 1st graders is because he teaches them to play outside the spirit of the game better then anyone else like the wrestle ffs. We have to stop respecting coaches that use the game like their own personal toilet and for feeding their egos no matter how successful they are.

For all the success he has had, he has been a blight on the game. Does anyone honestly think that the game is a better product then when before he took over the Storm? Look at all the rules we have had to change and adjust because of his destructive and negative influence.

And what the hell has he done for junior development in Melbourne/Victoria? Still waiting for the non Islander/Maori regular 1st grade junior to appear after nearly a quarter of a century. Hell they have only produced what 2 juniors of any background and they barely lasted and played more then a year or two. Where is all that investment going? AFL junior development? Give me a break. What a joke. Look at what the AFL are doing and producing in NSW and QLD.

The man is smart, I'll give him that, but he is also a parasite on the game. I can't support a coach that has contributed to the rubbishing of Rugby League more then anyone in its history. I think when all is said and done, he will be remembered as a destroyer and a massive missed opportunity for our sport and its development in Victoria.

Selfishness at all cost is not a virtue.

Switch West Coast with Collingwood. More members, and also the financially strongest club in the AFL but a massive margin.

There's always plenty of purple in the crowd wherever they play, and to be rating so highly in tv audiences when Melbourne audiences are small would suggest they have a broad geographical following outside of the state of Victoria. Some clubs have a much broader geographical following, Souths and Warriors would be 2 others.

Mate they have a small actual fan base that watches them because they like and follow them. Otherwise their actual ratings in their own City and State would be much larger for the week to week games. The main reason for the high ratings is because they are the most consistent and winning team of the last couple of decades so it forces people to watch them more whether they like to or not.

Unfortunately I wish I was wrong and they actually had hundreds of thousands of real glued on supporters but they don't. They have a lot of interstate secondary supporters who like them for varying reasons like QLDers because of the QLDers in the team. But not all that many hard core Storm supporters relative to their success and ratings.

They are still by enlarge a non entity within their own City. I bet you at least 9 out of 10 people couldn't pick out any storm player from a lineup. They would be clueless. That is the reality and until that changes and they actually start to develop kids into juniors, they will remain invisible. People will only know and be truly engaged when you see their little ones wanting to play the game and at the moment every kid aspires to have a Sheridan in his and her hands.

That must change if the Storm and the NRL want to be truly successful in Victoria. Doesn't seem like they do otherwise they would have done the ground work decades ago and not just relied on scouting the best available far and wide. Sure it is a winning model if to an extent, but a very short sighted one. When they lose the freak do whatever it takes cheating coach what will happen then? No base to fall back on. There will be more competition for Qld players then ever once the new franchise is up and running and if NZ also get their shit together, where will their players come from?

So where and what is their long term Victorian strategy? Much easier to grow and keep your own one would have thought. If they worked harder on this while it was sunny the last 15 odd years, maybe I wouldn't be seeing the Storm clouds brewing in the nest 2-3 years. And I guarantee you they are coming. For example where will their engine room forwards come from in a couple of years?

Anyway they and the NRL have made their bed.

Nrl invests around $14million a year in Victoria ($13million to Storm, $1million to VicNRL) AFL invests around $80million a year in NSW ($40million to swans and giants and $40million to grassroots). There’s your difference right there!!!

Are you saying that the NRL are great businessmen because they are not spending where they cannot afford to do so, OR, are you saying that the AFL are throwing away millions each year to an area that still doesnt give a hoot if they exist?

How the hell do the AFL have that much more money to spend on development compared to the NRL? Surely the revenue difference between the two isn't that enormous? Legit question.

I would guess that the QLD figures are similar right? Which would make it ridiculously lopsided and no contest who will eventually win the war.

All us old rusted on NRL supporters won't matter a rats arse what we say, think or do. The generations that succeed us will view AFL as a NSW and QLD sport just like we perceive RL as our States sport. Then is will come down to who runs the junior comps better, more money, better facilities and more mummy friendly. Add in that the AFL is the pollies and medias love child and we have an knockout in the 10th round. It was a good and plucky fight by those Leaguies, but they didn't stand a chance entering the ring with their hands tied behind their back and an opponent on steroids.

RIP NRL circa 2050-2060.

Alas it is, a lot more.
$350mill in 2017, $258mill. more in 2018 and $241mill in 2019. Even in last years covid year they still beat us by $257mill.

that’s over $1billion in just the last 4 years they’ve had to spend over us So no surprise they can afford to throw money at their growth strategy.

I’m explaining to ram why there’s a lot more kids playing afl in nsw than rl in Victoria and why the afl has significantly more locally generated players in nsw than rl in Victoria. $’s in, players out. Simple equation.
