How did you select your team to support

I'm a Kiwi, thus the Warriors. Little did I know the hours of therapy/LU counselling I'd need to commit to each year. I should have read the fine print.

Before that I was a Manly fan because they had Graham Lowe as coach, Tony and Kevin Iro, Darrell Williams, Matthew Ridge and the footballing God Clifford Lyons. Great fun to watch.
Same. Warriors fan but was Manly before that.
Shitty thing is I changed to the Warriors for the 95 season and f**king Manly wins it in 96

the very question highlights the fundamental difference between a Knights supporter and others.

I was born in Newcastle hospital over looking Newy beach and grew up in the coal fields with the son's of coal miners. You dont select to follow Newcastle - its in your DNA, the very fiber of your being. Rain hail or shine, wooden spoon or premiership I'd never follow anyone else.

There’s plenty of fair weathered dickheads in Newcastle. I have friends born and raised here after 1988 who support Souths, Cronulla, Penrith, Dragons, Bulldogs, Eels and Melbourne ffs. They try to claim a link to these clubs but they don’t have one.

I’ve never lived in the shire and never will, but I’m a diehard Sharks fan.
The reason I chose Cronulla as a kid was because of Tawera Nikau’s stupid mullet. For some reason I thought it was cool

I don’t get the whole have to support the local team otherwise your a traitor or not a real fan or whatever. Blind loyalty is good for some but not everyone wants to be sheep and just follow the leader

I just followed who my older brother followed. He picked the Eels because he was watching the 1984 GF and simply picked one of the teams to follow. He thought the Bulldogs were a bit grubby, so he picked the Eels.

After the GF, it was found out that some of the Dogs players were wearing illegal fibreglass shoulder pads. So not only was a love of one club born that year, a lifelong hatred of another was also born.

The way Newcastle fans cry "hardship" is pretty f**king tiring, and shows a lot of entitlement in their fan base.

NQ has the lowest win% of all active teams by some margin. Newcastle are a powerhouse in comparison.

Yeah, I don't get it.
Sure, they've had a few lean years lately, but try being a f**king Parramatta fan over the last 30 years!

I chose the Tigers because I figured if I support a team that’s at rock bottom, the only way is up

In all seriousness my dad was a mad Balmain supporter back in the day and took me to a lot of their games in the 90s and was a fan. Didn’t become instantly attached so the merger wasn’t a big deal to me, it wasn’t until 2004/05 I became a die hard

I grew up in the upper hunter in the 80's and 90's, Dad played for our hometown team the Aberdeen Tigers. At the age of 4 I'd watch Dad play and then when I saw a team playing on the TV in similar jerseys I thought it was Dad's team so I cheered for them. That's how I became a Tigers support at 4, When I started playing that just reinforced that feeling of them being my team. By the time the Knight entered the comp it was much too late for them to win me over.

Once I moved to Sydney for university in 1998 I became a season ticket holder and have been ever since.

on the contrary - the "hardship" doesnt " show" entitlement to anything. The club is a fair reflection of the town and its people. Hardworking, blue collar working class people who never ask for a handout. I woudnt have it any other way.

Who wants a rich yuppy latte sipping fair weather supporter of a club with endless money and brown paper bags that bring success from a stacked deck ? its a hollow victory. Success is that much sweeter when ur the underdog and the road there wasnt easy.

We’ve got nothing on Canberra fans. They could feel sorry for themselves for a living.

Yep.

Although TBF you have a lot of SEQ fans who have no link to the place but just hate the Broncos and started supporting you when you started having some success.

We don't really have any bandwagoners.

My older cousin(who I looked up to)was a Dragons supporter. I followed that lead which made sense as my late father drove a cab over Kenworth painted, you guessed it, red & white.
Pretty well cemented when I had Steve Gearin as a PE coach at school around the time he switched from the Dogs to the Dragons.
Been on the rollercoaster ever since.
