How long in Pura for Clarke?

I find it funny all this talk about batting positions, and Clarke cant bat at no 4

he just made 174 and 200 batting at No 4 for NSW

Hussey made runs at No 1 and at No 5

if a bloke can bat, he will make runs anywhere

So if you put Hayden at 11 he would be able to make runs?
How about Katich? He bats at 5 in test - fails, bats at 3 in Pura and does well.

Clarke is suited at no6. He has way too much ego, and plays way too manys hots too early in his innings. He should have a long look at how Hussey builds his innings or Hodge for that matter. They calmly build their first 30 in singles with the odd boundary and then increase the rate. Until Clarle learns to do this he will get out way too many times playing stupid shots early in his innings. Suits no6 becuase he can get out cheaply and it shouldn't matter providing our wicketkeeper and lower order are reasonable. If he comes off it is good if not a cheap wicket. I'll take that. His shot making is just not suited to TEST no4/5. Simple.

Did anyone listen to Mark Waugh on BSB? He was asked about Clarke and said he is probably more suited to number 5-6. He says you've got to play a lot of first class and test cricket to cement a number 4 spot. I think he was batting at number 5-6 before he was moved to 5.

It took Damien Martyn a while after they dropped Waugh.

he also said on the Back Page about 3 weeks ago, that it doesn't matter where Clarke bats

not sure where you're going here

Hussey builds an innings at 1 or 5

In other words, according to your argument, he bats the same in either position, which is what I was saying

Well unless he adopts a Hodge/Hussey like approach to his batting he won't succeed at no4. He needs to get singles/two's for his first 20-30 runs then once he is set he can look for boundaries. The problem with Clarke is his ego is bigger than Slater's and he tries to hit a boundary off every ball! Once he learns that it is a test match then he may be able to bat at 4, but until that time, number 6 or out of the side!

Clarke needs to model his batting on Hussey's. In more detail look for singles, and two's until you get to 20-30. Then once you are set you can look at boundaries. Until Clarke learns this he will be a number 6. He tries to hit boundaries off ball that should be left alone or pushed for one early on. Clarke's way of thrashing the ball only works in a limited way at number 4 and will more likely fail against good bowling. He needs to take a good look at his batting!

I agree he needs to build an innings, I posted that here about a week ago, he is too agressive too early

but to say he cant bat at 4, I mean 174 and 200 in his last two digs at no 4 for NSW

I know its not Australia, but what other no 4 in the country has done remotely similar

I think its more to do with his age and immaturity, when he matues he will build an innings

I dont care where he bats if he scores runs, but I cant see him spending a career at 5 or 6

Clarke has built big inns. He always could he got 150 on debut. He was just in a form slump at the international level. His shots were finding fielders and not the gaps.

Hodge, Lehmann have both scored big tons this year and you can add Hussey to that list.

not two in a row they haven't

Clarke didn't play in the last 2 NSW Pura Cup games in a row. He has been in the Test side failing during the middle of that time! The hundreds are apart!

Yes but it still isn't two in a row. First class cricket concerns all cricket basically, so that incudes Clarke's wonderful 5 in the test match! Hussey has scored two in a row.

Locky you ever met Clarke?

Actually yes, at the shield match a few years ago in QLD. He is a good bloke but that does not change the fact that he is in hopeless test form!

Locky, no matter which way you look at it, he has scored two centuries in two pura cup matches. 174 and 201 not out. If he keeps scoring runs en masse like that, he will find himself back in the national team.

He might but I can almost assure you it won't be at no4, it will be at 5 or 6. And he will only get in if Hodge fails numerously, which I doubt will happen. Watson will come back for Symonds at the conclusion of the South African series.

You reckon Watson will be back in that soon? He was hardly cemented in the team, and a decent layoff through injury....he'll spend a bit in Pura Cup as well to get the body back to 100% and form up. Anyway, I thought he said he couldn't play cricket at all for 2 months right after he did the injury, so he'll be out for quite a while.
