How the AFL boosts its numbers to sell its game

The AFL - which has paid North Melbourne $400,000 a game to play on the Gold Coast - is also capable of creative crowd counting. It reported an attendance of 9128 at Carrara Stadium for the recent North versus St Kilda match, yet Ticketek figures show only 3900 tickets were sold; 3000 were free and there were more than 2000 "add-ons".

Now rugby league was hammered in the press for doing something like this, meanwhile the AFL is also doing it. It takes a Roy Masters article for it to be revealed. I can only imagine how many real tickets were sold to the North Melb v West Coast game which was posted at 6k.

Well done Roy.

I wonder what Gallop thinks about that article.

the people that did it for league were the telegraph.

it takes the herald to balance the opinion out

Well The AFL has it's own problems now. Roy Masters article today in the SMH has just removed any credibility AFL had in its quest for expansion into Western Sydney and the Gold Coast!

http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/news/how-the-afl-boosts-its-numbers-to-sell-its-game/2008/07/11/1215658140139.html

As much as I hate union, they have a succesful team in Perth "Force" so the AFL don't have Perth all to to themselves any more. Melbourne Storm with a new stadium on the way will continue to build. In the next 5 years Yawnion will more then likely put a team in Melbourne and League will put a team in Perth. So that AFL pie just gets smaller!

So AFL's advertising pie in it's dominant states are going to be getting a little smaller. It is so funny that the AFL uses the Auskick clinic numbers to talk up the grass roots  That would be like League/Union using touch footy, and other footy clinics in there grass roots numbers. This really shows how dominant the Rugby codes really are in NSW and QLD.

The news just gets worse for AFL! All the lies have now back fired! Prepare for all the bad press to come out over the next few weeks. Good luck with an Irish team in Western Sydney:crazy: Most Irish people in Sydney live in the Eastern Subs with all the back packers! I am sure or the pacific boys will get right behind the team :D

What an awful article. He may have a point on the junior level of both sports but everything else was embarrassing to read.

However, ignored in the passionate debate was the 78,751 who attended the deciding State of Origin match at Homebush Bay four days before the Parramatta game.

Petrol prices and interest rates are hurting families, and parents who can afford the $45 adult general admission to an Origin match may not be able to back up for NRL matches.

Nor does the price of drinks and fast food at stadiums make it easier.
haha. Forget about disposable income being at record highs.

Forget about a hybrid state of origin game in Melbourne drawing a similar crowd to RL origin..

Blaming the price of food and drinks at the footy for people not turning up!?? LOL! Doesn't he know what a bag is. You do know that you can take your own food and drink to the footy, Roy?

I think you missed the point....the AFL is full of $%^#. All we have heard coming from AFL is that its taking over the country. Even 60 minutes did there bit with the most bias report ever! But now the truth is out.....the AFL have nothing going on in NSW and QLD. Memberships and crowds are down for the AFL in NSW and QLD. The lies have been exposed!

It just gets worse for the AFL they have just lost all credibility. AFL is gooonnneeee!!!!

I dont take everything this journo says seriously. Just because he says its so doesn't mean its true.

Like I say, I agree that at junior level in NSW the AFL is struggling and its simply too soon to think about having a team up there.

Just his pathetic defending of RL crowds doesn't stand up. What was his excuse for last nights 10,000 crowds? No origin this time. The weather wasn't too bad. Oh yes, of course it was the expensive pies that kept people away. Pathetic excuses.

As for AFL in Queensland and Sydney, after a few years on a high of course crowds/membership etc.. will be down. Even so, they are very good. Crowds go up when the team goes well, and down when the team returns to normality.

Making up things now. Not a good look...

Although you might get a job as RL journo if you keep it up.

As excited as people can get, it doesn't destroy AFL's cred just yet as its just a few articles in a Sydney newspaper. Something more Australia wide has to be achieved.

We need more journos like Roy. Funny how you'll never see an article such as this in the Telecrap.

roy and gus are doing the right thing by the game.

meanwhile at the telegraph they are sending reporters to count the number of fans at souths games to see if they are lieing, and trying to catch SBW p**sing on a wall somewhere.

the only problem with RL is news ltd involvement in it. and their media create the false perception the game is struggling

yeah i can understand how him pointing out how AFL lies about its junior numbers can be upsetting for you.

one sports expansion is failing, whilst the others is the gold coast titans.

its a start.

no one else is sticking up for league.

the rest of the media lap up the AFL BS.

pointing out the true situation will make some people take notice.

Cam, where did you get disposable incomes at record highs from? You may be right and it's a stat you saw somewhere but never before in this country's history has a mortgage taken up so much of one's wages. Plus the rise of petrol and its inflationary effects, I would suggest most people have a little less to spend these days. Why else has consumer confidence dipped? Roy's also putting the price of food and drink on top of an already expensive ticket. Not just blaming the price of said items. I think you may be over simplifying that particular point of his article or maybe you're just loaded and don't know how some people are doing it tough.

So are the figures made up? Now your sounding like the AFL

Like I say, I agree that at junior level in NSW the AFL is struggling and its simply too soon to think about having a team up there...

I Agree.....maybe if the AFL can sort out the issue they have with too many teams in Melbourne first.

Just his pathetic defending of RL crowds doesn't stand up. What was his excuse for last nights 10,000 crowds? No origin this time. The weather wasn't too bad. Oh yes, of course it was the expensive pies that kept people away. Pathetic excuses....

Welcome to Sydney! It's they way it has always been! Most parents won't take there kids to a night game on a freezing night in Sydney. No excuse, just the way it is!

As for AFL in Queensland and Sydney, after a few years on a high of course crowds/membership etc.. will be down. Even so, they are very good. Crowds go up when the team goes well, and down when the team returns to normality.

Yep....you said it yourself! The so called AFL fans in Sydney go because it's a fad at the moment! The more lies the AFL spins the more it will put a wedge between itself and potentional new fans in Sydney.

It just gets worse for the AFL.....how the mighty are falling! Putting a AFL team in Western Sydney is like putting a League team in Collingwood! It is just a waste of money!!!!

Have I hit a nerve? You have facts and figures put in front of you and the AFL try's to keep secret how they actual got to those figures. The lies have been exposed....AFL has made as much headway into Sydney as the Storm have made in Melbourne. If anything Melbourne have more juniors running around on a regular bases compared to the AFL and the AusKick clinic counting
