Hull KR's 20 man squad this week

What are people's thoughts on this ?

Out of the 20 man squad there is 14 overseas players and 6 Brits, personally i think this is a disgrace and should not be allowed to happen.

If the imports were enhancing the team and the game no one would probably argue but theymost of them are 3rd raters and there are much better players running around in the National Leagues.

They'll be relegated I reckon and that will solve that. Serves them right. Anyone who thinks packing the team with imports is better than a mostly local side is kidding themselves. Look at Wakey's team from last year compared to this year and where they are on the table. The problem for them and all promoted teams is they have to throw a competitive team together in quick time and that means picking up a lot of NRL rejects. Another reason for P&R to go.

Signing Rhys Lovegrove and Ryan Tandy was pathetic. If there aren't better players in their youth squad than those two in particular I'd be amazed.

Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast when teams are trying to avoid relegation. I agree with ECT, very much looking forward to the end of promotion and relegation.

Wigan are little better most weeks. I read somewhere the other day that there have been several occasions this season where they have had more overseas players out than Catalans and Harlequins.

I seriously don't know why sides do it. No offense, but the standard of the average former NRL player coming over to Super League is absolute dog turd.

Saints won the double last season with 5. All are superb international quality players. Thats the way to do things. 4 or 5 top notch overseas players, 4 or 5 domestic stars and the rest made up of locally produced kids. It's a shame that few other clubs share that belief.

Here in lies the problem.

England only has about 4 or 5 star players, they all happen to play for St. Helens.

Other clubs need stars too, and the only place they can be found is Australia.

Yes it's difficult to believe that Saints only just creep over the salary cap limit year after year with all of these star international players.

Where do you suggest we find a team full of high quality British players when all the best youngsters are taken by existing superleague clubs and we have little time to recruit before the season starts? If we stayed up and the team was still like this in a couple of years, i'd agree. We can't really do a lot about it at the moment though, can we?

It's the systems fault, not ours. :(

Suprisingly, he's actually been outstanding for your information.

Exactly. P&R is rubbish.

Not strictly true.

But anyway, those players wouldn't play for St Helens were it not for the mismanagement of all the other Super League clubs. Wigan, Warrington, Leeds, Bradford and Hull all spend as much (Or up to £220k more in some cases) as St Helens on players. A lot of the clubs also have bigger and more traditionally productive catchment areas than St Helens does. A third of all the Super League players probably originate from the Wigan area for example, yet Wigan can't put a decent squad together? Their player retention decisions are appalling. They come out in the press and bemoan the salary cap forcing them to release their star young players. Then they sign some expensive 29 year old former NRL star on a massive contract whilst the local kid they released signs for St Helens. Their doing, not ours. With the money they are paying Vaeliki alone they could sign probably 3 or 4 players. Bradford are another classic example, they sign dross like Ben Harris on a big deal and let Ryan Atkins, who would have commanded a third of his salary and is a miles better player, walk out? It's bordering on insanity.

The worst example of this is Wigan. They spend an awful lot of money on utterly shyte players. Had they NOT CHOSEN to sign dross like Vaeliki, Richards, Fletcher, Leuleuai, Bailey, Millard and Paeleasina they would have had more than enough money to sign players like Leon Pryce, Lee Gilmour, Ade Gardner and co. It was their choice not to do that. Leeds are getting to the stage where they are as bad. They have stars young players, and dominate the junior game with Wigan, yet have walking zombies like Toopi, Lautiiti and Kylie Leuleuai trapsing round on massive salaries.

I'd go as far as saying that for the majority of clubs the NRL players are a curse. They know the fans want success and they want it now, so they think signing someone who has played Origin or internationally will bring that. More often than not there is a reason that player is looking to play Super League, because they know they wouldn't cut it in the NRL. They come over and keep a young player out of the side and fail themselves anyway.

ST Helens are dominating because they are managed better than the other clubs. Eammon McManus and Daniel Anderson (And Ian Millward to be fair to him) have done an absolutely brilliant job off the field ensuring the right decisions are made more often than not.

Last night's result totally justified the Scum's squad selection. I can't see Salford coming back from three points behind with five to play. I hope I'm wrong but I just can't see it happening. Forgive me now I'm just off to my local church to do a bit of praying.

Webster & Oneill were not any good when they played for Balmain Tigers back in 1997. Seems more like 30 years ago. Vella as well? consider themselves lucky they are only running second last. They may as well sign 19-20 year old up and coming reserve graders over here and be better off if they are wasting money on players like Vella.

If the scum stay up then you could argue that their recruitment policy has been totally vindicated. If they've broken any rules then relegate them now. If not then what's the problem? They are only doing what the rest of SL do. Check out the number of overseas players at the likes of Wigan and Bradford.

What, you mean like Lovegrove?

We got slated for that too on the first page of this thread.

They're Aussies GJB. They don't understand the machinations of the P&R situation, especially for a newly promoted team. They have to do whatever they have to do to stay up as long as it's within the laws of the ESL. Here's to a few more Derbies next year.
