Agreed. Makes me think of him as Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High - "Dude, there's water in the boat".

Penn's heart's in the right place but you're right, he's a grandstanding knob-end. He'dve been better off just chucking some cash at the rebuilding effort than trying to be a hero. Still not really an excuse to hammer him as hard as some are doing right now though.

heart is in the right place?

to bring his personal grooming staff and photographers to photoshoot him helping people in trouble?

i think his heart is in the wrong place - this is not an event for the engrandisement of celebrities

with airports closed ports closed roads chocked up and very little time to prepare you are dreaming if you thought 100 per cent evacuation was possible in that time frame

Buggered if I know how you interpreted what I said as expecting 100% evacuation. It's the complete opposite to what I expected. There's no way they were going to be able to evacuate everyone, for a number of reasons, which is why they had to be prepared to take fresh water and food in for those who remained. There were always going to be stragglers. There was always going to be a need for fresh water and food.

What I meant is good on him for trying to do something, but points off for doing it in a stupid-self aggrandising way. But still better than sitting at home in Hollywood snorting coke out of Paris Hilton's bumcrack and pretending that everything's fine.

no it isnt spacey

he is using this tragedy to promote himself

snorting coke out of paris's bumcrack is not exploiting peoples misery for self promotion

Mr Richardson said today all consular officials were refused access to New Orleans and Australia could not "deliberately flaunt" US laws.

He said Australia was the first country allowed to send consular officials into the city.

Advertisement:
"The notion that we could send in helicopters to rescue these people over and above all others is simply nonsense," Mr Richardson told Macquarie Radio.
"Journalists were allowed in, consular officials were not allowed in.

"We're in a foreign country, if the authorities are not allowing it, then we can make representations, we can seek to go in, but we can't deliberately flaunt their laws," he said.

"They were allowing media in."

How odd? Let journalists in who can't do much but don't let other countries officials in that could help their trapped citizens..

ACTOR John Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, has delivered five tonnes of food for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Mr Travolta, an experienced pilot, flew the supplies in his own private jet to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, then toured the flooded city of New Orleans and visited rescue workers and shelters for evacuees. The two movie stars also brought along 400 doses of tetanus vaccines for rescuers.
The star of Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction said he was coordinating with Oprah Winfrey to get even more relief for the more than a million people affected by one of the worst storms in US history.

"That's our job today," he said. "We're hoping this time we're effective."

At the Jefferson Parish sheriff's command center, the two stars posed for pictures and thanked Scientology volunteers administering tetanus shots to rescue workers. Both are Scientologists.

At one point, Mr Travolta spoke quietly with Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee, then embraced him. Preston followed suit, with tears in her eyes.

"They've had such great loss," she said.

Take all the publicity shots they want.. if they are helping out then good on them..

who did he save? his hair dresser?

Sean Penn is a convenient sideshow for the right his actions may be ridiculous but they are irrelevant...why not get stuck into all the neo-right 'Christians' who aren't denouncing comments made by the extreme right praising Katrina saying it was some sort of lesson from God punishing sin in NO.

But to get back to the issue there is no doubt that the Bush administration has alot to answer for. Nobody can deny that.

Let's be clear - the above pieces aren't 'opinion' columns on how Bush may have done better if he'd done this and that. They are facts which show that Bush's priorities since coming to office have been so out of whack with good protective policy that Americans have no choice but to hold him largely accountable. His miserable leadership since Katrina can only reduce his already miserable approval rating (something around 40%)

Why did Bush say that nobody could predict the levies bursting? He is a liar!

All in all a miserable effort from your hero who has done "all he can" ...of course you could claim that Sean Penn is really GWB's personal advisor to shift some focus of responsibility.

the new york times and a leftist blog criticises bush

the scoops are in abundance today

I'd say they are pretty legitimate sources millers. Anyway forget the sources and concentrate on the quotes and the numbers within them. Here's another for you.
http://nytimes.com/2005/09/02/national/nationalspecial/02storm.html?ei=5094&en=893ec8093a2152c9&hp=&ex=1125720000&partner=homepage&pagewanted=print

"Chaos and gunfire hampered efforts to evacuate the Superdome, and, Superintendent P. Edward Compass III of the New Orleans Police Department said, armed thugs have taken control of the secondary makeshift shelter at the convention center. Superintendent Compass said that the thugs repelled eight squads of 11 officers each he had sent to secure the place and that rapes and assaults were occurring unimpeded in the neighboring streets as criminals "preyed upon" passers-by, including stranded tourists.

Mr. Compass said the federal government had taken too long to send in the thousands of troops - as well as the supplies, fuel, vehicles, water and food - needed to stabilize his now "very, very tenuous" city.

Col. Terry Ebbert, director of homeland security for New Orleans, concurred and he was particularly pungent in his criticism. Asserting that the whole recovery operation had been "carried on the backs of the little guys for four goddamn days," he said "the rest of the goddamn nation can't get us any resources for security."

"We are like little birds with our mouths open and you don't have to be very smart to know where to drop the worm," Colonel Ebbert said. "It's criminal within the confines of the United States that within one hour of the hurricane they weren't force-feeding us. It's like FEMA has never been to a hurricane." FEMA is the Federal Emergency Management
Agency."

Anyway millers, it isn't only so called 'left wing' publications that are saying
this.

Did you even bother reading the last post or are you just so lazy and so dogmatic that you can't even think about the option of stepping back and saying "hold up, maybe you Bush critics have a point..." Heard of the Dallas Morning News, Washington Times?
