I can't for one second imagine a similar event would happen here.

I think it's a bit unrealistic to compare what happened in Darwin over 30 years ago with what happened today. The advances in knowledge and technology since then make the two incomparable.

The tsunami is the closest we get to what's happened in NO. The difference is though that they had time to prepare for the hurricane's arrival.

time to prepare what ibeme?

To have emergency services on standby with freshwater (or those water purification machines that the Aussies had in Indonesia after the tsunami) and food, and a strategy for delivering it after the hurricane had passed. That at the very least. It seems that they'd unrealistically relied on everyone heeding the evacuation advice. Some simply didn't have the means. There were still hospital patients left behind.

everyone's ripping into bush, but wouldn't it have been the state government's responsibility to oversee all the emergency stuff and preparations for the hurricane?

I understand that everyone thinks fresh water should have been available - but for the people that died - what was the cause of death?

I was under the impression that for most - it wasn't a lack of fresh water but a lack of medication. Either they forgot theirs at home or lost theirs in the floods. No amount of fresh water would have changed those deaths.

"You have to watch this video to understand, how little regard our [US] government has for the welfare of its own citizens."

Video HERE in WMV format.

Yeah it would've been, the federal government only steps in when the State government can't cope. No one expected Katrina to be this bad, the Hurricane was expected to miss New Orleans and it did but they've been hit worse. Blade the police told the survivors to loot(they were doing it themselves) but only take what they need to survive, no one had any idea that New Orleans would turn into a scene from old western movies.

The fact is that lots and lots of people from both sides of the political spectrum think the whole thing was handled poorly. if that is the case then someone should be held accountable. I think what makes people angry is not the before preparation but the apparent lack of urgency shown by a range of officials (including Bush) after the storm hit.

3 states were damaged by katrina not 1 city

procedures within louisiana expected immediate help from neighbouring states
off course they had problems of their own

the area you are talking about is not restricted to downtown NO were the cameras are but thousands of sq kilometers

That at the very least. It seems that they'd unrealistically relied on everyone heeding the evacuation advice.

nonsense

dozens of assembly points were organised for stragglers

Some simply didn't have the means.

with airports closed ports closed roads chocked up and very little time to prepare you are dreaming if you thought 100 per cent evacuation was possible in that time frame

There were still hospital patients left behind.

and thousands evacuated

no fear

leftist hero sean penn is on the case

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

a leak??

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina’s flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

bwaaahaa

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket…

and doesnt he look dashing

...and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

poor guy

With the boat loaded with members of Penn’s entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: “How are you going to get any people in that thing?”

one of the sickest of all the leftwing opportunism i have seen in this horrendous event is this left wing show pony equiped with his personal staff makeup people and photographer trying to cash in

Actually if the levees had held NO would have been pretty safe. Katrina bypassed NO shifted to the right and hit Biloxi full on in Mississippi. The levees were supposed to have been improved but funds were diverted.

The states have there own emergency services but this is a major natural disaster and it requires a Federal response.

I agree. Sean Penn's reaction to the disaster in New Orleans has been pathetically inadequate, and his photo opportunities show that he is self serving and out of touch. No one from the right side of politics would ever stoop so low.

Some on the right appear to be more worried about how they can use this tragedy to continue Sean Penn bashing than worry about how they do something about it themselves.

Regardless if you disagree, it must be said that some have no sympathy for those hurt by the hurricane and are using it to push their anti-Penn propaganda.

The press looks for the juciest gossip and blame appropriation in order to sensationalise and create interest in their product

Hey, I think Penn is a wanker, personally. I was just wondering why it's ok to criticise him for his pathetic showboating and poor reaction to the disaster, but not George Bush?

i dont expect a reaction from penn tighty

he can throw in a few bucks for rebuilding that'd be great - he can even announce it publically

and anyone can criticise the Bu$hitler for causing all this death and tragedy until the cows come home

and i can bag penn out all i want so long as it is on topic

you gotta admit though, leave the left/right theater aside for a moment

the penn photoshoot was pretty bloody funny
