Darwin is a hell of a lot further away from anywhere that help cold come from than NO is, so I don't think that comparison is particularly valid. NO has the advantage that help was relatively close in neighbouring states, Darwin had to wait for it to come from Brisbane or Adelaide, and the roads weren't so good back then.

You don't think that a major city surrounded by fairly heavily populated states would be easier to reach than a provincial town isolated by hundreds of km of desert with only one major road leading into it? (remembering that both had been hit by approximately equivalent storms).

i do and darwins tiny population would have made the post operation much easier and there was no flooding in darwin - the main contributor to the post NO problems

the fact is there a huge storm and it would appear NO despite suffering the major floods on top would seem to have fared much better than darwin

so i dont know where this "we would have done much better" chest beating comes from

well actually i do

anti-US bigotry

Are you guys saying that a decision was made to ignore blacks at the expense of whites?

I've read reports that Hyatt guests were pushed ahead of superdome guests with the aid of the national guard. Read it in a sunday paper and am trying to find a source now.

The Aussie British and other governments were trying to get people in their to look for their citizens but, i believe until today, were denyed all access by the US. Any idea why they denied access? It could only have been for their own safety, then again if the US had done a good job that wouldn't have been much of an issue.

It has been said - even by many in the black population here - media and otherwise - who are actually from the area that this is NOT a black/white issue.

The population that was effected was more than 75% black.
The areas with the highest devastation - and on the lowest land was predominantly very poor and consisted of a higher number yet of black populous - estimates of nearly 90%. It was the poor that could not evacuate the city and many of whom did not have a way even to the superdome with no money or vehicle. Because of these issues, it will appear on the surface to be a white over black issue but you just can't even out the numbers when white people start as a minority in the area.

There is no explaining away the lack of ability to get to people but it is ignorant and arrogant to think that it would be different if it happened in your country. Not one of us on these boards can predict or even control how things would be handled in any certainty.

To Rex and others I would still say that you have not shown Australians to be more compassionate but rather (as I earlier said) - morbidly curious, quick to judge, and arrogant. Compassion looks beyond the finger pointing and looks for personal ways to help.

Everyone is an expert the day after a tragedy. There is certainly enough bad that occurred and poor choices made. However, there are also a lot of unsung heroes in this situation and many who have worked far beyond what would seem humanly possible to help those they didn't know. Part of a democracy is that we as a people help each other. The government is for the people and by the people .... it is not supposed to be big brother or the end all in every situation. Those who disregard personal responsibility and put their faith solely in the entity of the government will be disappointed.

btw MG

rex and the leftists on 4c are not representative of australian opinion

most here are very sympathetic and realize that such calamities bring multitudes of problems that must be overcome

our press however is like your own in that they are looking for the juciest gossip and blame appropriation in order to sensationalise and create interest in their product

At one point, the evacuation was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt Hotel could move to the head of the evacuation line - much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome since Sunday.
``How does this work? They (are) clean, they are dry, they get out ahead of us?'' exclaimed Howard Blue, 22, who tried to get in their line. The National Guard blocked him as other guardsmen helped the well-dressed guests with their luggage.
The 700 had been trapped in the hotel, next to the Superdome, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome. The Hyatt was severely damaged by the storm. Every pane of glass on the riverside wall was blown out.
Mayor Ray Nagin has used the hotel as a base since it is across the street from city hall, and there were reports the hotel was cleared with priority to make room for police, firefighters and other officials.
National Guard Capt. John Pollard called the decision to move the Hyatt people to the head of the line ``very poor.''

Those who disregard personal responsibility and put their faith solely in the entity of the government will be disappointed.

Are you saying that the people who got raped and assaulted in the superdome, that it wast their own fault? Isn't the role of the government to maintain law and order, especially in an area where people were advised to go to?

I know, Millers. Even Rex is sweet - but you have to be careful not to say it outloud. It could go to his head.

Whats that got to do with anything? I was merely challenging MG's assertion that

Those who disregard personal responsibility and put their faith solely in the entity of the government will be disappointed.

Do you agree that it is the government's responisbility to maintain law and order? Do you agree that money, not personal responsibilty was the determioning factor on whether people ended up in the superdome or not?

What an absolute tragedy. Seems to have brought out the absolute worst in society, and hopefully there are many examples to talk about once it's over to indicate that it's also brought out the best.

Some of the reports emerging life inside that superdome are sickening to say the least. That even in a time of absolute tragedy, a time in which you'd expect everyone to band together, there are some low-life mongrels who appear to be seeing it as an opportunity to commit dispicable acts. I just hope that this is a case where sensationalist journalism has hidden a far more promising truth truth.

There will be plenty of time to analyse the response once the rescue operations are completed, but it seems that the people in that area were let down on a number of fronts.

yes it is the governments resposibility to provide law and order

but guess what joed

even in the new zealand where the government has the same responsibilities people get raped

"Those who disregard personal responsibility and put their faith solely in the entity of the government will be disappointed. "

still remains a valid point

those that left when they could wether you like it or not were generally working middle class people

the majority that stayed i would venture to say are the unemployed and the drug community

flame away

but you know i am right
