He's got the shits

He's f**ked. Do feel sorry for the poor bloke, whether it's because of the heat or the gastro or both dehydration ain't nothing to f**k with though and given there's no hope of saving this he really shouldn't bat

Disagree. As the captain and leader of the team I think he needed to do everything in his power to avoid a loss. Not sure what his teammates think of him now going forward.

I think he’s a merkin but I reckon Bairstow would be perfect for England as captain.

He must be crook if he's been asleep for the last few hours, maybe it wasn't his call

Seriously? He went out and batted having come straight to the ground from hospital, went out at the fall of the first wicket, and then physically couldn't continue....I think if any of his teammates think less of him they don't deserve to be his teammates. Gone are the days of AB batting Dean Jones halfway to death, thankfully.

Certainly went up in my estimation. He's still a merkin but he's got some moxy

Full respect for Root for even coming out before lunch.

He sounds completely f**ked, he may have come out if Bairstow was still out there but there was no point if he was that ill.

Fair enough. I didn’t hear what the commentators were saying and was only making that call at the ground. Still, he was playing pretty bloody well for someone that incapacitated.

You know what...I’m sticking to my weak as piss call. Can anyone here see Steve Smith falling asleep with an Ashes game on the line? What about S. Waugh?

FFS Root was one of eleven players out in the field yesterday. He did not offer a false shot the whole time he was out there today against a fair pace and spin attack. The fact he was “sleeping” during the presentation ceremony is laughable. I would not want that merkin with me in the trenches!! If England are serious they should groom Bairstowe as their captain in the next year or two. Merkin is tough as nails and head butts opponents for fun.

At the presser after the game Anderson said Root had not slept or ate all night and on top of that he had the squirts and kept vomiting and could not keep anything down, including medication

I'm surprised he managed to bat as long as he did.

I agree. I think it's unfair for anyone to judge his courage when clearly, no one but the English medical staff truly knew his condition in a medical sense. I don't see Root as the type of player who would dog it.
He proved that this morning by getting out of his hospital bed and batting, again in awful heat.

I’m not convinced. He was solid as a rock for the hour he spent out in the middle today. Someone that far gone will not be able to face up to Starc and Cummins bowling 145km/hr and play them with ease. I have no doubt he was in discomfort but i’ll Ask the question again...

Does anyone think Smith, Ponting or Waugh would have “retired ill” had they been fielding yesterday and batted for a score of 42 at stumps with an Ashes game on the line?

FFS Bairstowe kept in pads and gloves for the same period of time Root was in the field and batted for a fair amount of time Root was in the middle.

Look back at the successful captains and they have a much harder edge to them than Root.

I think Root is a smarmy little douche but i think he showed plenty of ticker to come out in the first place, the medical staff would of probably stopped him even if he tried. Especially in a losing cause.

What's that got to do with a savage bout of gastro, though?
Nothing a few hydrolytes and Imodiums won’t fix for a few hours. It’s much more about what his team mates think of his utter determination to not losing than it is about the few hours of discomfort he had to go through today. If I’m in India bowling in 40 degree heat and I look at my captain who asks me to dig in for a few more overs for that partnership breaking wicket, I’m going to respond to the guy who pushed through adversity in Sydney and did everything in his power to save a test match than the guy who retired ill and fell asleep for the presentation.

Exactly.
As I said, I'm not going to judge him because I don't know the full medical circumstances.
That would be Bartman-esque to do so.
