The fact that the MInor Premier hasn't gone on to win the Premiership more frequently since 1998 than prior proves that the comp is more open now.
Winning the Minor Premiership for the first 80 odd seasons was almost a guarantee of reaching the Grand Final and winning it.
That's not the case anymore.
Let's forget Melbourne had a set of dodgy books for a minute, but to say we have an open and fair competition yet 2 teams have finished with the minor premiership 9 times in 17 seasons to me doesn't scream open and fair competition. The fact we have a semi final system with 8 teams (where winning approx 55% of your games gets you in) doesn't mean the salary cap is doing it's job, it means the final 8 system rewards the teams who are just scrapping by.
