I actually thought he was still playing busted. I'd bench him and promote Woods to the starting line up.

He has to be for sure. He has no leg drive at all. He is tryna fall to his knees as soon as he makes contact with the defence
We should rest him if wade is back

If you think the way Townsend played against the Storm (Both times this year, in fact, most times he has played them) was just Ok and other halves would do that, then why do other teams lack that game management against them year after year?

Obviously it was a good game, not just half decent, and if he does that we have a team built around that and can win any game.

"Swapping" a player depends on money and other players who can complement a player, so for the Sharks we'd need a top tier half or another good kicker and manager to replace Townsend (and people who think he is poor at either of those are out of serious discussion about halves, compare him to other NRL halves for the last 3 years, he is not terrible at those things).

So I wouldn't swap him for Hunt or Taylor as I don't think they do enough better to justify their fragility, and Pearce is not so much better that we should pay more for him.

But even if you want Moses (who has played about 8 good games in his career, as rocks and diamonds as they come) or Brooks (1 good season, with a very experienced minder doing all the big game management), or even Sezer or Nikorima (and if so, who the heck would run the team?), do you really rate Townsend as much worse than those guys?

This smacks of people with an anti Holmes agenda.

Townsend is not a top tier half, and not on top tier dollars. But has clearly kicked well enough for years, and is not a "passenger". First grade teams don't win premierships with passenger halves.

In regards to his defense, it is clearly good. Which doesn't mean he doesn't miss tackles and concede tries, as all small, wide defenders do.

If you wanted to dispute this seemingly simple observation (looking at both his style and his effectiveness) with statistics, quoting just accumulated missed tackle stats is a poor way to do it.

He also has a lot of accumulated tackles. Way more than most backs, as many as many forwards. Just based on that he is a top defender.

When you average both those out by looking at his effective tackle rate he is about the 80% we expect from average backs (a little under this year inflated by a poor game).

But this year he has made more one on one tackles than many other players, (right at the top of the NRL) so if we consider that with an average effectiveness, this makes his work this year good. For all players.

Given that he is in the position that is usually weakest at defending, he is a good defender out of the NRL halves.

Compared to Taylor or Sezer for example, he is a superb defender.

But that really is just gravy on top.

His kicking and game management are his main strengths, and he is good at them.

Every single attacking play in the 2nd half targeted Chad. Every, single, one.
Why? Because he always runs out of the defensive line.

Vals try, Chad throws a shit ball lucky Moylan plucked it out of the air.
Earlier Chads kick finds Addo Carr in space with only one chaser. Carr runs down the sideline, who misses a tackle on him? They nearly scored off that set.
Stimpsons held up try, who did he run over the top of?
Watching the replay again they were VERY lucky to win the game due to bounce of ball.

Dugan had a deadset shocking attempt on Addo Carr if you want to single people out on that play and that was before Chad came across and tried to shadow a winger, one of the fastest in the game mind you out toward the side line, not to mention Ramien fires himself in like a missile and slips over and lewis barely got a hand on him.
Chad's first bomb of the match should have resulted in a try, if not for old man Lewis not playing vaseline hands.
Chad responsible for a one-on one strip in a set defending our line, rare big play.

If you're going to hammer Chad at least show some balance.

I'm no rusted on Chad fan - but f**k me dead a bit of balance would be decent in this joint.

Particularly when if you go through the game and if you want to highlight individual mistakes there are plenty to pickup from all players who some of you blokes think were perfect.

He had an above average game, still made a few mistakes (mind you so did Val, who everyone is happy to rave MOM by far best player etc etc), leave it at that.

Yep he had a good game against Melbourne, no one can really doubt that.

If he can consistently play like that I'll be happy. I'll believe it when I see it though. Hope I'm wrong but I just don't believe he has it in him.

He played straighter against Melbourne that helped, when he runs sideways it looks bad and it is, and then flops ball for inside runner easy to see.

He needs to work on general kicking game, i said before match he needs to jump into dummy half on 4th and kick long for open space it works, Smith does it Chad needs to do it

Brailey needs to do it, if we want to get value out of our hooker, ala like Smith does.

Pretty f**king obvious if your 7 all of a sudden pops up at dummy half to kick.

But every single play I've mentioned had an impact on the game.
To say Chad had a good game is laughable., that's why I broke down only some plays he was involved in. I can and will break down every single play he does in this thread for the rest of the season just to highlight how poor of a player Chad Townsend is
If that's the standard people are happy with, Sharks won't win it with Chad Townsend at number 7.

Chad did have a good game. Recognised by people that have played the game At the highest level.

But you know better than them all. So we will leave it there.

If you can’t have balance. Don’t bother.

Other than his 1 on 1 strip and his first kick, which was a fluke, after 50 this year one is bound to be good. He did nothing
His good game was not f**king up and that's all it was. He didnt do anything special. As out half he didnt kick us into better position, didnt set up points. Our 5/8, bench hooker, fullback, back over and prop are out spark in attack.
Chad is loved because he is a shire boy but that's just wrong, he isnt that good. Simple as that
