I believe "sliding defences" actually have the entire team compressed then sliding including the winger ..... I don't think he's out there playing tiddly winks by himself wating for the others to slide over and join him

everyone plays up and in defence these days cos they want to get 4 forwards in each tackle in the middle of the park to slow the play the ball down - hence they have to crowd the middle and leave gaps on the wings - then the outside backs need to move up quick and snuff out any attempts at spreading the ball

unfortunately our backs are struggling with it atm - which is weird cos I think they did it well a few years ago .... I remember several times that both Eric and Ben came up quick, smashed a dude, then grabbed the dropped ball and scooted off with it ... I dunno why they've lost the nack now???

My theory is Eric has bad eyesight - which would also explain why he is a bit iffy catching kicks .... his eyesight isn't great and he doesn't see the ball coming properly - I swear he could have intercepted at least one of the passes he ran past on the weekend .... don't laugh - I am serious

OK... so Eric comes in too early to close a gap he didn't creat to begin with?

Yes, and I explained that as well.
You are obviously having trouble comprehending the concept of a sliding defence.
There is nothing wrong with having that gap in the first place.
Eric choosing to come in when it isn't necessary is what creates the problem. It gave the Newcastle halfback (as Fish has already mentioned) the opportunity to throw the long cutout pass to the overlap created by Eric coming in.
If Eric stays on his wing, it cuts out this option for the opposition, and gives his inside men more chance to slide and cover any gap that becomes apparant to the attacking team.
It ain't rocket science. Just seems that Eric gets itchy feet and can't help himself. It's his timing that is the problem, and as many have said, he has a very poor ability to read the play defensively.

Its a good theory Strides!

Yeah I agree... they have certainly lost their ability to cover the sides after sliding defense.. its weird... I dunno, but there are certainly gaps there.

Same with the tackle that Hindy and Joel missed for a try down the southern end, there was a gap and neither got there in time to stop it

Ok.... obviously I don't understand the way you explain it moreso than not understanding the action itself of which I understand very well thanks

I know, because mine is going as well.

But you know what causes that??  Well, so they say, anyway.

Funnily enough about the eyesight, the try where Vuna loses the ball over the line, Eric is actually watching everyone but him. Then at the last minute he turns to tackle. Only lucky Vuna did lose it coz it woulda been another stuff up. But it was honestly as if he couldnt see him running at him out of his peripheral vision..

You may be onto something Strides..

ok ... we can test this theory .... one of you sneak up on eric from the side one day and throw something at the side of his head .... go on

It's amazing that all the attention is on Eric for that first try, given that he wasn't at fault for the second - unless you blame him for taking the wrong man out of the three he was left marking thanks to Reddy.

Like i said earlier, you people always blame the inside man...whether it was Wagon, B Smith, Reddy or Matt Cooper in Origin. Tries are always scored on Grothe's side and there has only been one factor which has remained static....Grothe.

Think about it, you always say its the inside man's fault. I seriously doubt Wagon, Smith, Reddy and Cooper all have the same defensive issues. Its Grothe who is the problem.

I dont think Grothe reads the play well at all, the slightest hint of an overlap and he comes off his wing to try and shut the play down, sometimes its best to stay out there and hope you can make the numbers up.

Perhaps communication between Grothe and the centre is poor as well. In saying that id rather have Grothe in the team than not at all.

I seriously doubt that.

He's played few First Grade matches, played for Australia and NSW...How many First Grade NRL appearances have you made? Origin appearances?

Not saying he's perfect, because he messed up a lot. But he is also damaging in his own unqiue way. It's a catch 22 with Grothe - pick him because of his strong dummy half runs and ability to offload, or drop him because of his wofeul defence? You can work on his defence - even coach his centre and fullback to give him more support. But it's much harder to bring in someone else and coach them how to run like him.

Well, the second try was Reddy's fault, the last try of the night was Todd Lowrie.

The most important man in defence is the third man in, the second most is the centre.

Grothe certainly makes defensive errors but his value is great enough to keep him in the side.

As I said before, the Parra forwards wouldn't be too pleased if Grothe was dropped.
