1. Expansion
a)I would tell the Central Coast Bears to get ready to enter the comp in 2015.
b)I would tell the WA Pirates to get ready to enter the comp in 2016.
c)I would make an announcement that the game would aim to add a 19th and 20th team sometime in the life of the following tv rights deal (2018-2023 approx). The two locations would be Queensland and New Zealand. Any bids interested from those areas would be urged to begin working to create demand and grow their brands.
I would do something similar, but my timeline would be:
a- Central Queensland
b- Western Australia
c- 19 = Wellington, 20 = Brisbane or Central Coast
2. Scheduling
Each and every round round would consistent of exactly 8 games. Monday footy and Thursday footy would be abolished. There would be no byes and no split rounds. Barring the rare exception for public holidays etc, each and every round would look like this:
1. 7.30 pm Friday
2. 12 pm Saturday
3. 2.30 pm Saturday
4. 5pm Saturday
5. 7.30 pm Saturday
6. 1pm Sunday
7. 3.30 pm Sunday
8. 6pm Sunday
No way. 12 noon (no such thing as 12pm) is ridiculous. Imagine playing in the noonday heat in Townsville, Rockhampton (see above) or Brisbane. Insane. Also, not an amenable time for crowds to attend. 2:30 Saturday is similarly impractical for crowds. I would be happy with a Super Saturday 4:30, 6:30, 8:30, but to be honest you could probably argue crowds back at me.
All games would be simulcast nationwide at least on a digital channel and on pay tv. The distribution of slots between the teams would be done with the number 1 priority being as even as possible a split between all 16 teams. No more nonstop FNF for the Broncos. No more bending over teams like Canberra.
Anything that spreads the FTA around teams is good. Can't disagree.
3) Rep footy
No more rep games getting in the way of club footy during the regular season and adding even more unfairness to the comp.
No way. I think the switch off element kicks in after the grand final. Once our "cricket brain" is engaged, we aren't half as interested in footy. SoO occupies a unique spot in the calendar. Keep it mid-season, when the players are all at their peak.
As for unfairness, in a way SoO actually operates as an unofficial talent equalisation scheme without express provisions to lower the salary cap for successful teams. In way, it is fairer for everyone.
Well, in a way.
The rep schedule would be:
1. all stars game in February between the indigenous and NRL all stars. This would rotate between country areas in NSW and QLD to give them a replacement because there would be no more city country game.
Why does the indigenous game always have to be in the country? Don't the urban indigenous population deserve a chance to attend? Urban anyone for that matter. Perhaps alternating country/city? That said the profile the game gets from being a "big ticket" item probably necessitate it being in a modern stadium instead of a showground.
2. State of Origin would take place during 3 consecutive Friday nights in October. No more affecting club footy, no more losing momentum after 1 game when all you want is for the next one to start.
No. Just no.
3. International footy would be for the RLIF to control (don't care enough about it for it to be part of my coup), but it would not be allowed to take place between the all stars game in February and Origin 3 in October.
This would be an integral part of my coup. International footy needs a leg up that our new rights deal could help provide with minimal impact on Australian footy. And a strong international game is good for the Australian game.
1- Change Origin eligibility so that a Qld/NSW rep can also represent another country. This would stop Origin soaking up players from other countries.
2- At least one minor nation Test in Australia per year. The benefit of the Kangaroos playing the Bati in Suva would be incalculable, for example.
3- Support clubs who are supporting developing nations. Look at what Newcastle is doing for Fijian players. Great stuff. They deserve a salary cap rebate for their work developing the game abroad. Anywhere where we can provide a career path for players in developing countries should be encourages.
4- Pacific Cup. Not strictly an ALRC issue, but this was held once. Should be on every year.
5- TV. Internationals from everywhere would be on GEM. Or something. All the time. Just look at October/November this year. We could have broadcast Canada v England Lions, Aus v NZ (which of course was broadcast), France v Wales, Wales v England, England v France. All at very minimal cost.
I could go on, and on, and on.
If you had dictatorial power over the NRL for a life term, what would you do. Keeping in mind no stupidity like "kick out Souffs". Positive constructive things that are at least doable.
One last thing. I wouldn't kick out Souths. I wouldn't invite Brisbane Bombers in. But I would invite Wynnum-Manly Seagulls in.
