Immediate changes from Bennett

THE battle for the Broncos’ crucial interchange utility spot is wide open after off-season recruit Travis Waddell has been forced to undergo surgery on his elbow.
Waddell may lack the profile of fellow big-name imports Darius Boyd and Anthony Milford, but Broncos coach Wayne Bennett sees the former Knights rake playing a key role next season.
The tough-tackling 25-year-old is the frontrunner to clinch Brisbane’s No.14 jumper in 2015, but an elbow setback three weeks ago has opened the door for a raft of bench candidates.

Bennett confirmed he will stack his bench with three big forwards, leaving the likes of Waddell, Alex Glenn, Todd Lowrie, Jordan Kahu and rookie Ipswich hooker Matt Parcell to vie for a utility berth.

The Courier-Mail understands Brisbane’s starting back row will be Matt Gillett, Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday, with Jarrod Wallace, James Gavet and Mitch Garbutt to provide size and punch off interchange.

Parcell has trained the house down in pre-season, winning Brisbane’s 2.5km time trials, but Bennett believes Waddell can be a handy addition when he returns to full fitness.
“I am certainly going to go with three big boppers (on the bench) and then one utility player,” Bennett said.
“I bought Travis Waddell for that reason, I think he can be a good back-up for Andrew McCullough, but I’ve hardly seen him lately because he’s had an operation on his elbow.
“He had a small problem with it and he’s now in the rehab group. I coached him last year at Newcastle and I like what he brings.
“There’s not much of Travis but he defends extremely well in the middle and he’s very competitive.
“He does a good job at dummy-half without blowing everybody off the park. He’s pretty tough for his size, some of the hits he puts on blokes is unbelievable.
“I just like his toughness and he got a lot of confidence towards the end of last year at the Knights.”

Bennett said he will not be actively chasing more recruits for next season after luring Boyd, Gavet, Waddell and Kiwi Test enforcer Adam Blair to the Broncos in the past six weeks.
“Unless someone else falls out of the tree, I’m more than happy with what I’ve got here,” he said.
“There’s no more recruitment here in the short term. There might be some small changes in the next 12 months but nothing more is planned for the 2015 season.”
Fullback Boyd said he is impressed by Brisbane’s emerging wave of talent headed by young guns Jayden Nikorima and Joe Ofahengaue, who have been elevated to the NRL squad.
“It’s my tenth year coming up and seeing these young guys, they are all fast, fit and skilful,” Boyd said.
“They are running ridiculous times and their skills are a lot further ahead of where I was at their age. It’s pleasing to see and it’s good for the future of the Broncos.”

Big point out of that - Alex Glenn may be omitted from the first grade (first choice) squad.

Big change in tactics from Griffin who often went with one prop on the bench - and sometimes didn't even play him.

Maybe Jarrod Wallace will be the big improver this year - the forgotten man in the front row. He's certainly been patient and has been given such limited opportunity thus far. With a bit of confidence and responsibility this could be his breakout year.

Personally I would prefer Glenn to start and Gillett off the bench.

Strange that Oates is not even mentioned in the article.

That's one way of looking at it but we both know he's not wanted and the best result for the Broncs is for another club to pick him up and negotiate a deal to cover the shortfall. A bit of a win/win for both clubs. One gets rid of something they don't need or want and free up some $$$$$ while they other gets a player they think they need but for less than they would have to pay if he was at the top of his game and in high demand.

If Boyd and Milford fall over this arvo and both do their knees Bennett might see a reason to keep him.

Didn't mean to jinx the club with that one. Apologies.

Blair is a very good signing.
I have bumped into him few times over the years with his mates at Easts.
He never felt like one of the boys at the Tigers.
Top bloke as well.

Well.. didn't I tell you.
Good to see mah boi have a good start in Broncos colours.
Loving his one percenters.

Blair is a key player for us now. Hell against the Rabbitohs he was probably the third best player on the field behind only our halves. We missed him for the two weeks he was out suspended. Blair plays we probably beat the Bulldogs atleast.

Bump.

How has Blair been going?
Haven't watched many Broncos games this season.

Why do you pretend to be Elia Tuqiri?

He was slightly amused by also quite concerned when I told him.

Do you own your own sand pit?
