I have seen him interviewed about it though and he stated he will not coach England from abroad like Bennet did. I would say the fact the re-signing was announced basically the day after Mary finished is a statement that he won’t be applying for the job. I want him badly too but if you were being realistic rather than hopeful I think you would have to admit it’s a very low chance, very very low. Lower than Bennett, lower than Fitzy and maybe even lower than Flanno. That’s just my take. I will be spewing if we don’t apply and give it our very best attempt for sure and I hope he’s well in the conversation but I’m not fighting with anyone on here I’m just trying to be realistic.

Not suggesting you were.

Sounds pessimistic to me.

I'd rather see how it pans out rather than dismissing it before it does.

It’s not pessimistic. I think if 100 people read that article yesterday that he’s re-signed with England RL to ward off NRL interest, along with him him stating he will never coach England from abroad more than 90 of them would agree it’s highly unlikely he’s going to be our coach. I was shattered when I read the article. Things can change sure but I wouldn’t bet my backside on it.

No to Dean Young,
I don’t get the push for Fitzgibbon as he has had ultra cushy job at Roosters, with unlimited Cap, TPA and all of the best at finger tips. Why would we consider yet another Rookie ?
The Club had Hasler, Cleary, MacGuire all available and yet decided to rush on extending Mary for no logical reason.
Bennet as short term to rebuild and set the foundations for the future, maybe stay on as Coaching Director.
I do like Shaun Wane as a fresh start, with credentials....our squad is soft, no aggression no passion whatsoever.

btw - I’m not sold on Flanno and having to wait another 18 months to have his ban lifted and then to have him bolt will be a risk as well.

"While Webster conceded that Young is "highly regarded at the club", he said some fans may will undoubtedly want fresh blood and new ideas at the club.

“The problem with Dean Young from the perspective of the fans and the members is it will be seen as someone from within again," Webster said.

“If things don’t go well next year they will say he is a young rookie coach and we have to give him a couple of years.

“Then before you know it will be nine years with only a handful of finals appearances and Dragons fans and members are starting to get worn down by the lack of success.”

Did he actually say this ? If so then isn't Young out of contention ( and rightly so ) ?

Where does Wayne and his new Beau want to live. There must be some nice homes on the south coast we could find him overlooking the beach not far from the training oval. In the days off go throw a line relax and draw up a list of recuits.
Give the Bennetts Widdops former place.

Yes and you would have to think, yes.

Most fans and members are fed up right now with the corruption and nepotism so widely evident in our Club. Young was not the senior assistant coach he was just Criag Young's son.

An outside coach should have be brought in immediately.

I’m not sure if an article written by a journo will rule someone out of contention but the article is spot on the money.

Hard to argue with this rationale.

Tough job to pick the right guy.

According to some, Wane's agent in Aust has already forwarded his application for the job, along with a few others.
Extending his contract with England has not excluded him from applying.

If I had to make a choice it would be Wane, just seems like the prefect candidate. After I saw him on the podacst I was sold.

Okay well that is great to hear. I haven't heard that. I hope it's true. I can only go off what I have heard and from what I have heard he is not applying for the job but if this development is true it is very exciting.

This was an interesting.article. basically Wane has no 'coaching' games until the 2021 RLWC at the end of next year. The extension was to, as the article states' "to keep him focused on the job (as England coach)".
It also openly states that they are aware of NRL coaching positions open.
Also, the 2022 extention, is basically for the proposed Kangaroo tour at the end of that year. Again another whole year before he actually coaches.
There is nothing to state he is excluded from coaching in the NRL.

That being the case I would be happy to sign him for next year even on a short term deal until other coaches become available. Hopefully he decides to stay on.

Paul McGregor is under massive fire and headed for the sack.

St George Illawarra were poor against the Warriors on the weekend and are yet to win a game this season. They have won just twice in their past 13 fixtures.

Last year they finished second-last and won just eight of 24 games. McGregor, a club legend, has been in charge at the Dragons since May 2014 with a 46% win percentage.

Since he took over they have yo-yoed, finishing 11th, eighth, eighth, ninth, seventh and 15th. It makes for uncomfortable reading.

The 52-year-old coach has unable to take them past just barely making the eight and get them into the top four, or a grand final. He’s had plenty of time, but it’s now time for a change.

Enter Shaun Wane.

Many in the NRL won’t know the pugnacious Englishman, but he is a perfect fit for the Red V.

At 55 he is experienced, successful and eager to prove himself in Australia. The current England national team coach, after taking over from Wayne Bennett, would be well-suited to the Dragons.

Shaun-Wane-England.jpg

He was a tough, uncompromising forward as a player in the 1980s and 1990s, and he is a tough, imposing figure as a coach. In eight years as head coach of Wigan Warriors, he won everything on hand in Super League.

Wane got Wigan to four grand finals, winning three of them. Under him the Warrriors reached two World Club Challenges and two Challenge Cup finals, wining one of each. His winning percentage as a coach is 68%.

As an assistant Wane learned under Michael Maguire and like ‘Madge’, Wane’s teams are gritty, determined, defensively strong and difficult to beat. Wane would instill that toughness and mentality into the Red V.

A workaholic, the former Great Britain international has been studying the NRL for years. He has always wanted to coach down under. He also knows Ian Millward, St George Illawarra’s recruitment well.

Hell, he may be even able to entice his friend John Bateman, who he coached at Wigan, to come to Wollongong. That would be some coup.

St George Illawarra have a talented roster. They have the raw materials in Cam McInnes, Paul Vaughan, James Graham, Corey Norman, Ben Hunt, Euan Aitken, Trent Merrin and the Sims brothers to be a semi-finals team.

But they need a new coach to take over. Dean Young and Mathew Head have never coached in first-grade. Trent Barrett failed at Manly. Shane Flanagan is suspended. Anthony Griffin was punted by Brisbane and Penrith.

Why not take a chance on a talented, hard-nosed Pom?

The last time an Australian club did that was the Newcastle Knights with Malcolm Reilly. That ended with the Knights winning the 1997 grand final, pulling off of the biggest shock results in rugby league history.

Maybe it’s time another Aussie team did.

P.S Thank you @Dragsters
