Incident in the Panthers-Tigers game

When the Panthers broke through the line on their way to the last try, a Tiger behind the line and coming across to where the break was collided with the main referee and went to ground. Had he not gone to ground, he would've been in an excellent position to make a tackle or attempt a tackle on the player who broke through. Does this count as a form of obstruction, or is the onus on the players to avoid the referees?

I saw that but if the player actually thought he had a chance of making the tackle he would have complained about it. Instead he took a dive

Referees are to be regarded like the goalposts, an accessory to the field, it`s your job to avoid them, although they need to do their best to stay out of the way.

When I saw it on replay, it almost looked as though the ref dropped his shoulder a bit. Certainly didn't stand still.

Regardless if the player complained or not (more than likely not bothering because the game was over well before that try), shouldn't the ref have gone upstairs as the collission potentially affected the play?

The Tigers player was never going to stop the try from scoring. He was getting left behind by the Penrith players going through the line.

To say he would have been in an excellent position to make the tackle is a bit much.

When the Panther who broke the line initially came to the fullback, and passed inside to his support, it wasn't too far from where the Tiger collided with the ref...he would've at least had a shot on the support player, or placed enough pressure on that the pass wasn't made.

All if's and but's I know, and it wouldn't have made a difference to the result, but what if that were the game winning try? At least a look from the video ref was warranted.

It's easy enough to avoid goalposts, as everyone knows where they are and where they will be. The ref's aren't stationary though, and are constantly moving around.

I must admit, to be fair to the point you are making, I was waiting for the ref to blow the whistle and call a scrum....thinking that the ref had interupted the play.
It would have been Penrith's scrum feed as they had the attacking advantage as the play was in the Tigers half....but yes I do see your point.

A couple of years ago McKinnon pushed the referee out of the way, defending the in-goal area. He got suspended for a few games, if I remember correctly. You just need to cop it when a ref interferes, except when the ball hits the ref, then they can call the play back I think.

One step away from becoming involved in the play. Could be interesting.

I'm glad other people saw this too.

Looked like the ref braced for contact rather than moved and did drop the shoulder a bit.

Glad the game was a blow out and it wasn't a one try game, that could have been interesting.

A referee cannot just disappear during play, therefore the correct decision of play on occurred.

Well, with the closeness of the competition, those 6 points could come back on the Tigers in for and against. I think the right decision was made though.

Whenever a referee interferes with a play, isn't the advantage meant to be played toward the attacking team?

Hard one to call. I'm stunned the commentators didn't bring it up, I'd be spewing if I was a Tigers fan. Didn't have a huge bearing on the result as the Pennies were already in the clear.

That play summed up the refs performance tonight. 8 penalties to 2. Disgraceful. I know we lost becasue we couldnt defend but that did not help us.

they're a protected species - i remember wayne chisholm copping 14 weeks for 'tackling' a ref who was badly out of position and got it the way

Pfft, Cumlover and that other dickhead referee are both clueless f**ks.

In my opinion, that's a no try and and a scrum to the team in possession of the ball where the referee obstructs the player.
