The main thing about a pre-season is putting miles on the clock, doing strength work and putting on bulk for any of the less mature bodies. If we can get through the preseason with Maloney and Cleary doing work from Jan to March, I’ll be happy.

They would be in the test squad if fit and wouldn't be training anyway. Much better senior guys to get the body right

James Maloney to undergo spinal surgery to relieve pain and weakness

Penrith ace James Maloney will undergo potentially career saving neck surgery this week.

Panthers officials were privately worried that a chronic neck injury would cast a cloud over the long-term future of the 32-year-old Maloney.

There were fears that Maloney would need a disc replacement - a delicate surgery with complications.

But scans and a visit to a specialist last week confirmed that Maloney just needs minor repairs to his spine and will be back in full training by late December and should make a rapid and complete recovery.

“It’s great news and a relief for James and the club,” Panthers supremo Phil Gould says. “Few people realise how brave he was all last season.

“He played most of the season with pain and weakness in his left arm.

“It was a tribute to his courage and commitment that he played many times when he should’ve been watching from the grandstands.

“He is a brave young man.”

Excellent news.

It's all too easy to sit here in this forum and criticize Maloneys performances in the back end of the year without fully understanding his injuries and how they hampered his game.

If he was able to perform the second half of the year the same as the first half, we would have had a real shot at the premiership.

Lets hope this surgery allows him to play at the peak of his ability for the full season.

Most of the criticism was aimed at selecting a busted player who was a liability. People did the same when we did it with Wallace in 2017.

We wanted Jimmy rested around Origin so he could be fit for the end of the year. He didnt get a break for so long he was busted when we really needed to find form.

He should not have been given the workload he had through the Origin period. Cleary is younger and missed 8 weeks. RCGVis younger and could easily have his minutes cut. Peachey played about 15 minutes of repfooty all up. While our oldest rep player just didnt get a rest until injury forced him to be rested. Even then we tried managing his injury through playing.

He, the coaching and medical staff deserve to share blame for that. Someone needed to think ahead for end of season. The fact we were first leading into Origin should have made it an easy decision to make. We werent desperate for wins at the time.

Unless he had a brain injury then his penalties in the Sharks game can't be forgiven

This is a longer recovery. But one thing we know well is that Nathan is very pro active in rehabbing injuries. (7 week layoff good example)

Does this mean basically no pre-season for Nathan to train together with Maloney? That’s a real shame. Would have been better if he had the surgery immediately after the end of the season.

I really don't think that is an issue. Nathan is always committed to rehabbing injuries. He was entitled to a holiday before his surgery.

With no Mez or Sam we need a big season out of Tim “The Prince of Penrith” Grant!!

I really hope he plays well. I’ve always had a soft spot for him.
