MINING magnate Nathan Tinkler has launched an audacious bid to take over the Newcastle Knights and is prepared to take his offer to the community in a bid to get it across the line.
But Knights officials were last night reluctant, claiming the deal is not lucrative enough.

Tinkler, who already owns Newcastle's A-League club the Jets, has offered to settle the Knights' $2.75 million debt and provide up to $10 million in investment over the next 10 years.

But Knights chairman Robbie Tew says the offer does not go far enough.

"With no guarantee Nathan will at least cover our existing revenues, I don't see how it puts us in a superior financial position to the one we are in now," he said.
"I've conveyed to him that we don't think the offer goes far enough but I'm not sure if that is the end of it or not. The offer only arrived last night and I've had further correspondence today but that is as far as it has got."

Asked would he be prepared to take Tinkler's offer to the Knights members for a privatisation vote, Tew said: "Not in its current form, no."

The Knights turn over $20 million a year with $7.5 million coming directly through sponsorship. It is understood some sponsors have indicated they may bail out if the club is privatised.

But Tinkler's right-hand man at the Jets, executive chairman Ken Edwards, said last night the offer was genuine and believes it is the way forward for the Knights.

"Nathan's been in negotiations with the Knights now for more than 12 months and the offer is a fair and genuine one," he said.

"It pays down the debt which is close to $3 million and just as he has demonstrated with the Jets since he took over the club, it is all about the community with Nathan and he is genuine about that."

The knights board are nuts..

1 - Under the board the club is in debt in a 1 team city ..

2 - Doesnt even put the offer to the club members.

3 - How many times will a person worth half a billon dollars come by to offer

the board thinks they are Manchester united...

all the proffesional clubs in major sports are mostly privately owned...

All sounds pretty sane to me.

You'd be mad to accept the first offer.

Makes souths seem like a bargain though

kmav, all your remarks do is prove you have NFI about the finances of the Knights club and NFI how to spell "Manchester".

Question has to be asked how the Knights managed to get into a 2.5 million dollar debt.

I agree that the offer laid down may not be good enough if the club continues having operating losses.

After paying the debt, there would be a total of $7.25 million dollars over 10 years, or $725,000 a season.

If there are any excessive operating losses (Which it appears there are), that would mean the club would hardly be making any steps forward at all.

Problem no other person has made an offer or will make an offer..

Tinkler is competing with no one....he doesnt have to increase his offer...

If board was smart do you think they will be in financial trouble ???

They are in a city with 1 team ...how can they be in trouble????

The fans members and public will rip the board... tinkler needs to just sit back

It's accumulated debt so we're not talking about them magically spending 2.5mil in the last 12 months, we're talking over a sustained period.

It's obvious to anybody close to the club this isn't a good offer and he's trying to pick it up on the cheap - trading on the goodwill of people of Newcastle after what appears (so far) to be a successful buyout of the Jets.

And this clown is willing to pay 2.5 million and then 1 million a year instead?

Tell him he's dreamin'!

Well if he's serious, he'll have to increase his offer, because at this stage they have said no.

If they believe the manipulative spin from Tinkler and his cronies, maybe. Those who take time to analyse the situation will realise it's not the best deal for the Knights.

If you think that Tinkler won't make another increased offer (if this one is turned down by everyone) you're a fool.

of course it's accumulated debt timothy, problem they have though is that unless operations change, the accumulation of that debt will increase.

In another 5 years time, it could very much double. Then they're in the sh*t.

Absolutely, but none of that should mean they need to settle for the chump-change Tinkler is offering.

$10 million sounds like a lot of money to the uneducated but it's nowhere near enough, the Knights deserve more.

no he wont. it is clearly stated he will incest 10 million over 10 years.

thats a very fine trickle to a club that in 10 years would turn over 200 million bucks, and he'll have put 5% of that into the club

I'm with you that Tinklers offer is pathetic.

The big issue here is the clubs commitee and board. They have the club going downhill.

This needs to be rectified, the money will eventually look after itself.

If you were tinkler why would you pay more if the asset is in financial trouble and you know there is no one else who will make an offer..

tinkler gave the knights emergency 500k loan brink of bankruptcy...

scrapping by year after year...

tinkler is a ver smart business man... nothing to 500m in a few years..

the knight boards... debt after debt...

You'd love it to be that simple wouldn't you?

Another victim of media (and Tinkler) spin.

If the business is indeed in that situation, why buy it at all?

Skase and Bond also went from zip to multi millionaires in a short period of time as well.

Not saying Tinkler is dodgy like that pair, but saying he went from nothing to millions in a short period of time doesn't always mean he's a good businessman, he may have had his fare share of mistakes and borrowing of money to help him through.

People win the lotto and do the same thing.

He can't be that smart if he wants to buy peanuts for a company making nothing but financial loss. What is smart about that transaction?
