Intrumentals

Inspired by listening to the new metallica album, I thought I would gather your impressions on instrumentals in albums.

To me the 9 + minute instrumental called suicide & redemption on the new album is boring and pointless. Something that whilst not horrible in itself is definately something that I will skip past in future listens.

I cant think off the top of my head of a long instrumental that hasnt become a skip track.

Obviously short and sharp ones are more popular like VH's stuff but they are more solos than instrumentals.

Placebo kick off sleeping with ghosts with bullet proof cupid which is ok but still I skip it now if im having a listen.

What are some instrumentals that have longevity or do you think they are a no no and should be scrapped??

I dont think Metallicas new one is any good but I cant think of many now off the top of my head.

Jessica by the Allman Brothers Band is not only a mad song, but it is mad fun to play on Guitar Hero

Dream Theater have a number of instrumental tracks or five-minute breaks without vocals and to me they are the real highlight - despite the fact that James LaBrie's voice is phenomenal.

Do yourself a favour and buy Vinnie Colauita's solo album for a phenomenal instrumental album.

The other instrumental that springs to mind is Def Leppard's Switch 625. Brilliant.

Depends what your into. If you can appreciate guitar skill and are into metal (like me), here are a couple that are over 5min off the top of me head:

John 5 - Black Widow of la Porte
Metallica - Call of the Ktulu, Orion
Buckethead - Soothsayer, Nottingham Lace
Rush - la Villa Strangiato
Marty Friedman - Valley of Eternity
Allman Brothers Band - Jessica

I'm sure there are more that I can't think of.

What about the shadows??? they had about 30 top 40 hits. Not bad for a instrumental band.

Call of the Ktulu, the album version isn't anywhere near as good as the S&M version.

Orion is brilliant.

Queen's live performance of Brighton Rock is also pretty damn good, it's just Brian May and John Deacon going at it, brilliant stuff.

Roger Taylors drum solo in Keep Yourself Alive at the Rocks Montreal concert I think is also pretty good.

The new Metallica instrumental does nothing me either, but LTE - a Dream Theater spin off group have some good ones. Acid Rain and Another Dimension come to mind.

The first time I ever heard Fade To Black it was at a pub without vocals. The song just blew me away.

So I'm considering it an instrumental for the purposes of this thread.

Jessica by the Allman Brothers Band is not only a mad song, but it is mad fun to play on Guitar Hero

X2, Love that song on GH. Even better is the album version which has a keyboard solo.

Cliffs of Dover is pretty awesome too.

there's an instrumental on the new soulfly album called 'soulfly iv' (i think) which is a pretty nice insturmental

i agree that a lot of instrumentals dont have much thought go into them, or were just 'jammed' riffs whcih is why they become skipped tracks a lot of the time

i must say i'm slowly coming around to the new metallica instrumental.

It's still not better than any instrumentals named here, but it's not as bad as I initially felt.
