The only sports I follow closely are rugby league and cricket.
I used to like watching union, back in the 80's and early 90's. I don't think I have watched a game in full since about 1998. Not enough running with the ball. I saw maybe half of the world cup final back in 2003 but didn't see anything to bring me back to the sport. I've never seen a game live.
I've seen 1 game of AFL live in my life, at the MCG. That was enough for me. If I ever see it on tv, I just shake my head wondering how people can like that mess.
With soccer, the quality of the A-league isn't good enough to bother with, and I don't see the point of watching the English premier league to follow teams from places I've never been, playing a sport which is boring for 90+% of the time. I played it as a kid, which was fun, but watching it is a real bore. I will cheer for Australia in the soccer, even if I won't watch a full game. The only thing I like about it is the way they have their international competitions (world cup, asian cup) set up. I like how they have the qualifiers going on for a couple years to get to the big tournament, and I like how they have small pools of 4 or so at each stage, so most games are important for getting through to the next round.
