Opinion Is Ricky Stuart the most overrated coach ever?

Rickys greatest achievement as a coach is selling his soul to the likes of Paul Kent and Paul Crawley who say that every issue at Canberra isn't Rickys fault.

Blame everyone bar poor old Ricky.

Its almost sickening how Kent always says Ricky is always right.

20 years since he won a comp. Has a coach other then Brian Smith gone 20 years without winning a premiership.

Ricky went out and bought a good side capable of winning a GF but he lost one in a close game and lost a couple prelims in what we would call his premiership window and now that window is shut imo, if they kept Bateman and the pommy halfback maby they'd still be in the mix but they didn't and Hodgson getting season ending injuries last couple years obviously doesn't help, thats alot of cap on the sidelines and he probably isn't even worth his paycheck even when fit now.

But he has WON a comp, hasnt it?
So he's certainly got that over a lot of coaches like Bea Arthur.

Chalk another W up for the Rickster!

Everyone has a free and democratic right to be wrong, friend
Have faith in Ricky, the boys just need to bleed green and get a bounce of the ball here and there. You so called experts dont see how close we are.

The biggest problem is we dont really know right now if its that we need to bleed more of our green blood, or if the green blood we're bleeding needs to be greener. Tough spot but it's early in the season and that's why we pay Stick the big bucks

Brad Arthur is for a seperate conversation.

When they talk about the great coaches in the game Brad Arthur barely gets a mention and rightly so. Never coached the side to a prelim final yet after 9 seasons.

Ricky may have got further a couple times but he also gets a free ride from the media due to his buddies in the media.

When has Ricky ever been under the pump by the media over his record. Do you seriously think 3 finals appearances in his last 11 seasons as a head coach going back to 2009 at the sharks when he tore them apart is a great record.

A few flash in the pan seasons at canberra that come and go every 3 years papers over the cracks.

I think members of the media walk on eggshells when it comes to Ricky.

Tbh it's a pretty big achievement to get us as close as he has to lifting a trophy. We can't really attract players, as we are the only club located in a city without a beach. These modern generation players love building sandcastles. We had to get poms.

Even some of the pasty skinned poms prefer the beach apparently. Surely once the lads venture down to Kambah pool (left of the carpark of course, are we allowed to say that anymore?) they quickly come around to the benefits of Canberra life.

I wonder how Bea Arthur would go if at the end of this year, Bellamy ‘retired’ from head coaching to take up a role as head of football at Melbourne (but still materially involved in the day to day running of the team), and Bea took over the head coaching role?

Because that was how Sticky won his premiership. Given the best team and overseen by one of the best coaches of the day who has built the roster.

Pretty sure Ricky built the building blocks of the Roosters success in their next 20 years.

Well that's what he'll tell you anyway.

Definitely.

They never wanted the pain of having to endure a GF winning captain’s speech like Craig Gower’s ever again; it is a fire that has burned red hot for almost 2 decades.

Losing the unlosable GF to provide motivation to the club for years to come; that’s what makes Ricky great.

Raiders should target country players who prioritise the bush and smaller town feel over building sandcastles if it means living in the big city. Some will develop then get seduced by Uncle Nick or Bellamy or Bennett (if he's still around) and some will not kick on. But there's probably your best chance at attracting another Belcher/ Meninga/ Daley etc who sticks with the club as a player.

A vintage Sticky presser tonight.

A good salty, surly start really set the foundation.

Followed by a bit of early contrarian combativeness with the reporters, even when they were trying their best to piss in his pocket.

“Ricky, was that a 9 out of 10 for frustration tonight?”

“Oooh, it was worse than that”.

Quickly onto a bit of the Stick Man’s bread and butter, self-pity.

“I’m sick of it! I am sick of sticking up for these guys!”

Then a few more jabs at the media to bring it on home.

“You blokes in the media want ‘X-Factor’, well I’m just trying to teach Savage how to play NRL football and YOU blokes want X-Factor!”

And the crescendo of an abrupt, unexpected signature Sticky storm off.

*chefs kiss*

In a turbulent, topsy-turvy world of pandemics and international warfare, it is nice to come home, watch the Raiders collapse and sit back and enjoy a sulky Sticky presser that plays all the hits. All thriller, no filler.
