Why do we have to keep comparing to other codes like that though? PL holds no relevance to us, completely different competition, geography etc.

AFL crowds being 50k+ is more often than not an outlier, similar to when we get crowds of 20k+ tbh.

Either way we're not on the AFL's scale - haven't been for a long time and doubt we will be. Time we stopped focusing on what they get and just work on simple growth for our game.

FWIW, I feel the Fri 6pm game so far (small sample size yes) is faring better crowd wise than MNF was. With good scheduling Fri 6pm can work in the right markets.

more along the lines of world's best practice!

most of the responses in this thread are saying it's a great time........for listening and going to the pub and having it on when getting home!

how about the best time slots for actually going to the game? nothing promotes the game better than big attendances at matches. the atmosphere and the experience is so much better. the NRL need to balance TV broadcasting with match attendance

Its great for growing the game in the west, nothing better than 3pm/4pm for live sport on the TV on a Friday lol.

Thank you for the love fellow NRL fans.

I got digital pass, no way to watch the replay until the next day.

6pm friday is a f**king atrocious start time for a match.

better keep the networks happy i suppose, because eventually no one will be attending games....it seems to be heading that way and the NRL dont seem to care.

murdochs sky do the prem in england but you'll still have the bulk of matches aired at attendance friendly times.

here in Oz, it's a bit of an embarrassment to have 50k+ crowds regularly at AFL matches and the NRL have 70k empty seats at its major venue.

In a perfect world, Friday 6pm matches would only be used for Good Friday and Warriors home games that are played on Friday night.

So far, it's got reasonable attendance figures, but unfortunately there are several sub-10k attendances coming up as the weather gets cooler. Games such as Manly vs Newcastle (Lottoland) and Roosters vs Newcastle (Allianz) are going to be difficult to promote.

Thing is, the AFL have 2 games on live this Saturday at the same time (i.e. 7.30 pm) so what are Fox doing? Showing them live on 2 channels  How will the Victorians cope?!

Considering both the free to air networks and Fox have multi-channels, it is ridiculous how we can only seem to have 1 rugby league match on at a time due to TV.

Yeah well tough shit, the NRL straddles 5 time zones and WA is right at one end and the smallest market, if the games were at a perfect time for you guys they'd be late on the east coast (the primary market) and would pretty much lose the NZ market (which is more important that WA). The current times are the best compromise to get things to work for everyone.

I feel for the people in the tropics but there's no real reason Southern Qld and WA can't do DS. They should run daylight savings south of the Tropic of Capricorn IMO. North of the tropic there's no real advantage as the days aren't actually any longer in summer

I think Allianz ones will do fine - accessibility from the city will actually work in their favour, weather depending.

Its not an ideal time if we are going to be honest but its also tricky for the nrl because they dont want games over lapping anymore and there are only x amount of workable times.

6.30 would be better but it would push out the second friday game too much which is verging on a pretty late finish anyway

I mentioned in the 2017 Crowd Watch thread that the NRL could use the first 5 rounds (during daylight saving) to their advantage and have the kick-off times for the Friday games pushed back from 6/8pm to 6:50/8:40-45pm, with the second (Ch9) game held in Queensland (Brisbane/Gold Coast/Townsville).

And in addition, I have also made reference to the point that it's frustrating that the NRL have this fixation on not wanting games to overlap anymore, thereby ruling out any possibility of an additional Sunday arvo game for at least the next 5 years. They can peddle out all the excuses they want, but there are many sporting codes with $1 billion+ tv rights deals that have simultaneous games. The issue about simultaneous games cannibalizing tv ratings is a moot point now that Fox simulcasts all the Ch9 games as of last year.

I don't think it is the NRL. I think its the TV networks pure and simple. The TV networks have run roughshod over rugby league for decades regardless of what organisation has run things.

Maybe the NRL should personally phone every 'fan' of the game and ask for their availabilities. Then once they've scheduled games to suit every single person's requirements they can send a rickshaw around to transport every single person to the game.

If the NRL did that we'd cut the amount of merkins whinging about the game to about 95%.
