J. Hayne

Point taken. I didn't really take any notice who made the original comment MightyBronco was quoting.

I do seriously think comparing Hayne to Lockyer is a bit stupid. The former ahs a lot to prove, but a lot of years in which to prove it still. The latter has nothing to prove. He is a future immortal, and I've repeatedly stated I rate him the best player I've seen (and I'm old enough to have seen Lewis, Meninga, and Sterling).

Hayne by virtue of his awards can be considered among the best, as for being the best how do you compare different positions, achievments etc

The thread is built for people to weigh in with useless drivel

Which is unfortunate because it takes away from the point that was being put up for discussion

Namely, that Hayne is the best player in the game.

Of course he is.... anyone who says otherwise is drunk, stupid or an AFL fan. (or perhaps a Raiders fan - although drunk and stupid probably covers most of them :p )

As for 'not turning up' for the first half of the year: it's almost as if people judge him on a different level (which proves the point that he is by far the best in the game) - if Hayne doesn't make 2 long runs and set up 2 tries and bamboozle 10 defenders, then he had a quiet game.
Try telling the Sea Eagles (round 2 and 10) that Hayne wasn't playing in the first half of the season; try telling the Cowboys and Bulldogs (in rounds 7 and 8) that Hayne wasn't playing - or the Storm (round 13) --> Hayne was pretty well the reason Parramatta won all those games. And he didn't do it all with dazzling footwork - he set up tries for teammates, saved tries and organised the defence masterfully.

But as good as he is he can't win every game if nobody else helps - and when his halves are working it takes the pressure off for him to do his 'fancy' stuff.

Over the course of this year, Hayne has set up more tries and put more teammates into holes then Darren Lockyer has. That's not an opinion, that's a cold hard fact.

And he's only 22??

Can someone explain the logic in the "oh, he is too inconsistent at the start of the year" logic to me??

How does it make him worse that he plays unbelievable footy at the business end of the season every year?

Call me crazy but I'll take the Hayne's and Inglis's of this world who turn it on after round 16 to the Farrah's and Soward's who stand out throughout the year then go missing when push comes to shove

The issue is that with Hayne Parramatta are scrambling their way in to a top 8 spot now. They will have to do it the hard way because Hayne (and the rest of the team) were so rubbish for the first half of the season.

The Dragons and Tiges are in a much better position finals wise.

Would I rather a consistently good player over a flashy genius who goes missing for the majority of the season? Yes.

Not really, fullback is the one position where the momentum of your team can have zero impact on your own performance as you can nearly always get the ball with distacne between you and the defence thus increasing the space enabling you to do something.

So either he's a) getting the ball in better spots from deeper in the offensive line (like Slater and Boyd do) or b) hes pulled his finger out and not being as lazy.
If it was that simple how come Slater kept getting smashed in his first year at fullback for QLD?

Maybe it has something to do with the other 12 players putting in as well? Last night the go forward in attack and defence from Parra was awesome. The work of Ben Smith, Fui etc made the environment for Hayne to do his bit

Exactly. And he has a lot of silverware in his cupboard.
Silverware? Medals, maybe. Silverware? What - Heather's got his grandmother's jug? Nice.....

These Hayne threads are rediculous. Geez - which player could do what he did last night? He's brilliant. He's also not the only brilliant player in the comp - some at the end of their careers like Heather, some mid career like Benji, some early like Hayne. Yet, Hayne has a blinder, and everyone bags him - he should have also scores 2 tries in 6 minutes, set up another 2 in the next 12, and made the tackle of the season in round 4 as well. FFS!

How come Inglis never gets the MIA tag - when was his last MOM performance in a Storm jumper from rounds 1-26?

Actually professor Loudstrat he has won Dally M 5/8th of the year numerous times.

Im sure there would be a few premiership rings in that cabinet too.

But hey, wouldn't he love to trade that all for a Dally M player of the year award so he could be as good as Jarryd Hayne?

I should've been a little clearer when I said that.

I made that remark about Lockyer simply because a) he's been consistant for a lot longer b) he doesn't wait till halfway through a season to start playing well.

As far as Im concerned he's got a long way to go to be considered the best in the NRL when there's guys like Lockyer around.

As great as Lockyer has been in the past.. He is past his best now and hasnt been consistent at all this season....

Also you may wanna watch Hayne this season He has been playing well since round 1 not as good as last 3 rounds but still better then most...

Last time I checked Farah has won a comp.

Who knows, maybe if Hayne played in the GF last year Parra would have won. :sarcasm:

Obviously most people here only watch the games their team is playing in....

Hayne has been solid all season, sometimes brilliant, sometimes lazy but never bad.
Locky, Slater, Inglis, Idris etc have all had their moments both good and bad too.... Hayne's brilliant patches show that he is an amazing player and will be for a long, long time.

Hayne is the best fullback in the game for mine - he can do things no other fullback can, including Slater. Slater's two main strings to his bow are outright speed and his brilliant support play (I rate him the best support player I've seen), but he has nowhere near Hayne's creativity with ball in hand.

Loudstrat has a point though - no-one has any problem with Inglis (or Thurston) not turning up for half the season.

At the moment he is a 5/8 incapable or unwilling to defend in the front line. He is very, very good at it in the tradition of the ball running 5/8 that was somewhat lost when back rowers became the standard type for running pivot.

IF, and it is a big if, he can get his positioning in defence better and more consistant he may be considered a great hybrid style fullback.

I am waiting for the real pressure games before lauding him as one of the greats though

I think leagueunlimited.com needs more Hayne threads.

With origin over the quality and passion in the Ennis/Farah threads needs to be replaced.

Hayne threads fill that void.
