As he gets strength and conditioning and confidence. Add Jack D B and one more wrecking ball forward we will improve after April. A addition to the backs a winger come centre come fullback to cover the lot.

Bird had a good game not a great game, one area that let him down was his defence, which is listed at 55.6% ie 10 tackles made 7 missed 1 ineffective.

Maybe a confidence thing, maybe fitness, but hard to ve over-critical for his first full game.

It could be too soon to get him to 5/8 and his body shape looks wrong for such a position. As I suggested, maybe a move to the edge forward may help confidence wise. The question then is who plays left centre?

He is better than Aitken. It is one position we have improved in. But agreed, he can develop a lot.

Some of his missed tackles were him charging at the ball player and falling off. Not great but good intent which has been lacking from the red v for ages.

Bird is wasted in the centre’s & can be replaced by Mat Feagai. Depending on Norman’s form I’d like to see Bird at 5/8 once he’s regained full fitness.

Overall I thought Bird’s contribution was good in a well beaten team. Lomax was pretty ineffective as well. No room to work with, our shift plays were easily defended.

But on the positive he got through uninjured & he’ll more confident for the run. Also the Williame selection worked out pretty well.

The thing that impressed me yesterday with Jack was his attitude and energy.
He also got involved every time there was a stoppage or questionable refereeing decision.
Was right in the middle of the Ramien scuffle.
Could be Captain material as he has a Lead by example attitude and would simply say “follow me boys”.

Bingo, it hit me during the game that Bird would be the ideal captain at five-eighth. But the coaching staff would have to put Max Feagai at left centre and be prepared to drop Hunt if he show poor form.

This would solve a lot of our problems but would cause a blockage for the young halves coming through. After watching McCullough yesterday, he seems the ideal replacement for McInnes at 9 with a big 60 odd tackles to his name. So I would resist the idea of Hunt to 9 unless McCullough is not available.

Mr Bird looking at a 1 game suspension for a foot stomp on Suli.
I remember seeing it when it happened and thought he might be in trouble but then replays suggested he missed and was perhaps just all aggressive body language.
Thoughts.

His aggression makes a huge difference.

Pretty soft incident to cope a weeks suspension. But it may not be the worst thing he can rest up his knee & one of the Feagai’s can fill in. He’ll be missed though

I reckon thats harsh.
Munster flipping someone backwards over his knees, Crichton with a grapple head and neck get fined only. Bird the only one to get upgraded to Grade 2, everyone else Grade 1 even the punch to head by Fifita
If Bird missed and it did not look like a real stomp, no time in the bin, why is not Grade 1 or a fine sufficient.
Should he fight the grading?

Birds fitness is fine so he didn't need this spell, if anything it just kills the momentum he had building up. Williame will slot in, clune most likely to the bench.

Williame will come in at centre, if Bird takes the week off.

Given the structure Hook has in place, I think Ford will come in to the #17. He basically fits the same mold as he can play a variety of roles. However, he'd need to show something in the KOE Cup game tomorrow.

To me it seems that the match review committee saw that as Newcastle's Bradman Best would be out injured for a few weeks, they decide to charge Bird so that it even out the playing field.
