James Segeyaro wants to be released from his last two years of his contract with Leeds to sign with the Cronulla. But Cronulla won't agree to Leeds transfer fee for Segeyaro to be released. It's a shame for the Sharks because Segeyaro would be a good fit after the retirement of Michael Ennis.

"FORMER Penrith hooker James Segeyaro needs a release from English club Leeds to have any chance of joining Cronulla next season.

The Sharks have told the rake to get a release from the final two seasons on his contract if he wants to return to the NRL at the premiers.

The Papua New Guinea-born hooker is staying with close mate Wade Graham while holidaying in Sydney, sparking speculation he will join Cronulla.

The Rhinos are prepared to release Segeyaro, but only if they receive a significant transfer fee.

However, The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Sharks aren’t willing to fork out this figure to secure former Panther.

A source close to Cronulla said the club had previously expressed an interest in Segeyaro and would only re-enter discussions if Leeds granted him a release.

“We spoke with James prior to him taking up the option at Leeds,” the source said.

“He had to make a decision by the first of September, but he decided to take up the option.

“If he is granted a release, then we would be happy to continue discussions again.”

Segeyaro’s potential return to Australia follows news fellow discard Chris Sandow also wants to remove his NRL career."

The simple fact is that if the Sharks don't pay compo to Leeds they won't get Segeyaro.
Segeyaro should have never signed a 2 year contract.

Stand your ground and demand the transfer fee for any movement of the player. the player has signed an extended contract around which the club has made built the rest of their cap for 2017-18.

No sympathy for him at all and I think it's pretty obvious this is a ploy to put pressure on the club and make it look like a personnal issue when it's not. we have seen it a few times in the NRL in the past to get early releases

A bot sick of the players and to be honest the English clubs should just stop giving any of these second chancers like Carney, Sandow etc a go because they are just arrogant little #*%*wits

Yeah I agree. I'd like to see Hetherington stand firm. Suspend him without pay when he doesn't show up and retain his playing contract until it's paid out.

Leeds shouldn't be panicking about the lack of hooking options. Yes Segeyaro made a difference last season but that was at the back of a miserable run of form and plenty of injuries.

Worst case would be like the Greg Eastwood scenario where he's released from the contract and the club feed out some bs about 'a formal youth player exchange arrangement between the clubs'

Only way the fans will be remotely placated this time is by hard cash

Segeyaro should have engaged the brain before he signed the 2 year deal at Leeds, but perhaps he wasn't homesick then, or perhaps he hadn't had an offer from a NRL club.

Given the Radrada situation, plus Holmes and Taumalolo toying with NFL, I don't think the NRL should be complacent. In this case the NRL should not act as an enabler and let an NRL side shaft a SL side.

What annoys me is players bleat about loyalty and they all ask/demand long-term contracts to provide security, but then want to be able to walk away the moment they get a better offer, and have the safety blanket of coming back if they fail elsewhere. Zak Hardaker pulled the same garbage on Leeds earlier this year - it just backfired on him when no NRL side was interested.

I agree that players should remain loyal to contracts, but clubs seemed to be able to get out of contracts for players they don't want much easier. You can argue they will make up the difference, but its the principle remains the same.

Daly Cherry-Evans was slammed for backing out of a contract with the Titans. While Robbie Farrah and Michael Jennings both got alot bad press for wanting to remain with their clubs the Tigers and the Panthers despite it was the clubs who wanted pull out of the agreement.

NFL poaching NRL players being a imminent threat, I'm skeptical. To compete well in NFL you really need to play high school and college football. There is alot to catch up on, don't be surprised with Jason Taumalolo and Val Holmes it doesn't pan out.

Glad to see Leeds taking this stance. It's getting silly how NRL players are going over there getting the big money and just walking out on a whim.
Believe me I understand how hard homesickness can feel but they're not signed up for a lifetime and they're rewarded very well fo the time they are there.
Plus I believe in Sandows case had he gone about it in the correct manor the chairman would have driven him to the airport at the end of the season and waved him off.

Could get messy legally. Leeds have terminated his contract but retain his registration. Not sure how that works but its effectively priced Segeyaro out of any NRL club whilst freed up a sizeable chunk of Leeds' salary cap.
